Seven local high school athletes have been named All-CIF Southern

Section in boys’ and girls’ basketball.

The CIF Southern Section office released Tuesday the names of

athletes selected to different division teams.

In boys’ basketball, James Lambert and Matt Brennan represented

Marina on the Division I-A squad.

Lambert, a senior who averaged 17 points per game, was named to

the 10-member first team.

Brennan, also a senior, was a second-team selection. He averaged

16.5 points per game.

Two Ocean View seniors who played four years of varsity

basketball, Matt Sargeant and Greg Okwudibonye, were named first team

and second team, respectively, in Division III-AA.

Sargeant averaged 17 points, six assists and three steals per game

and Okwudibonye averaged 15 points, eight rebounds and nearly five

steals a game.

During the 2003-04 season, Okwudibonye set a new Ocean View record

for steals in a single season with 134.

“There’s no doubt these two brought nothing but positive praise to

the Ocean View basketball program,” Ocean View co-head coach Jimmy

Harris said. “They are great players and great kids. I couldn’t be

more proud of them for what they have done on and off the court.”

In girls’ basketball, Edison’s Rebecca Kepilino was named to the

first team and Valerie Katayama was a second-team selection in

Division I-A.

Kepilino, a junior who was co-MVP of the Sunset League, led the

Chargers in scoring and rebounding with a per-game average of 18

points and six rebounds. She also averaged three steals per game and

led the team in three-point shots made, achieving these numbers

despite missing Edison’s first five games of the season.

Katayama, a senior, four-year varsity performer and Edison’s team

captain the past two years, averaged 12 points and four assists per

game.

“I’m excited for both girls,” said Edison coach Corey Kelly. “They

both are great players, have great attitudes and are great people.”

Ocean View senior Leila Abufarie was also selected to the first

team in Division III-AA.
