Sea Kings sweep foe

The Corona del Mar High boys and girls track and field teams remained

undefeated in Pacific Coast League dual meets after each posting

convincing victories against visiting Calvary Chapel Thursday.

Freshman Tiffany Liu claimed three events to lead the CdM girls to

a 106-20 victory over Calvary Chapel.

The CdM boys had 11 different individual winners and earned a

112-14 victory.

Liu claimed convincing wins in the 100-meter hurdles (17.8), long

jump (15-1 1/4) and triple jump (33-3 1/2) while Annie St. Geme won

the 400 (1:01.9) and 1,600 (5:09.2) for CdM (7-0, 2-0 in league). Liu

set personal records in the hurdles and triple jump.

Melissa Swigart in the 100 (13.1), along with Kelly Morgan in the

200 (27.5), Hilary May in the 800 (2:24), Devon Ahern in the 3,200

(12:23), Lindsey Ensign in the shot put (30 feet, 2 inches), and Kate

Heeschen in the high jump (4-10) earned victories for CdM.

Swigart ran on CdM’s two victorious relay teams.

The CdM boys (5-2, 2-0 in league) won both relays to add to the 11

individual winners, who included: Mordy Ornguze (100 in 11.9), Cliff

Taylor (200 in 24.2), Brandon Borcoman (400 in 52.2), Kevin Artz (800

in 2:08.9), Garrett Prechel (1,600 in 4:51.9), Ryan Guthrie (3,200 in

10:32), Eemaan Jalili (110 high hurdles in 16.8), Ross McKee (300

intermediate hurdles in 45.0), Zach Wishengrad (shot put), Blaine

Gribble (discus) and Andrew Wong (triple jump).

Both CdM teams will compete at the Trabuco Hills invitational

Saturday. Events begin at 8 a.m.

Newport sweeps Irvine

* TRACK AND FIELD: Joel Walker, Elizabeth Clayton and Stephanie

Lambrakis doubled to help their respective teams defeat Sea View

League host Irvine Thursday.

Walker won the 200 and 400 meters (23.2 seconds and 52.9,

respectively) as the Newport boys (2-0 in league) earned a 74-61

victory.

Keith Eldridge won the 100 (11.4), while Trevor Theriot won the

shot put with a season-best throw of 49 feet, 2 1/2 inches and Bo

Taylor established a personal record of 146-10 to win the discus.

On the girls side, Clayton won the triple jump (35-1) and 100

hurdles (16.3), and Lambrakis collected victories in the 100 (13.4)

and 200 (28.0) to lead Newport (2-0 in league) to a 101-34 victory.

Lambrakis also led off the Sailors’ winning 400 relay.

Allison Stokke cleared 10-0 in the pole vault to tie the school

record and Ciara Lawrence threw a personal-best 30-7 1/2 in the shot

put.

Megan Randall (800), Lauren Paul (3,200), Lauren Cohen (300

hurdles) and Jennifer Ryder (high jump) were also winners.

Eagles down Mustangs

* GOLF: The Estancia High boys golf team moved one step closer to

winning the inaugural Scott Cup by defeating crosstown rival Costa

Mesa, 188-255, in a Golden West League match at Costa Mesa Golf &

Country Club Thursday.

Sophomore Marcus Sostak earned medalist honors for the Eagles

(8-4, 4-0 in league) as he shot 1-over-par 35. Garrett McMasters and

Nick Lettieri shot 37, while Jason Les (38) and Greg Les (40) also

contributed to the win.

Brian Beach had the lowest score for Costa Mesa (4-8, 2-1) with a

44. Al Rodriguez (49), Brett Via (50) and Robert Angle (55) also

scored.

The Scott Cup is a trophy, named after boosters Jim and Joan

Scott, is given to the winner of the annual Estancia-Costa Mesa

season series. The winners will also be treated to dinner at Newport

Rib Co.

Estancia plays an 18-hole match Tuesday at noon, facing Mililani

High in Hawaii.

Mesa shocks Saddleback

* TENNIS: The Costa Mesa High boys tennis team won six doubles

sets and ended host Saddleback’s Golden West League winning streak

with a 10-8 victory Thursday.

The Roadrunners had gone undefeated the prior two years and

through six matches this season before the Mustangs (3-6, 3-4 in

league), staged the upset. Mesa had lost its last 22 league matches,

in the Pacific Coast and Golden West leagues, entering this season.

The doubles tandems of John Dang-Brian Nguyen, Huy Thang-Huy Dang

and Huy Pham-Huy Le each claimed two sets for Mesa while Daniel Gomez

earned two singles victories. Gomez’s 6-4 triumph over Ming Ng

clinched the win.

Eagles defeat Seahawks

* TENNIS: Sophomore Scott Braunsdorf lost just two games while

sweeping at No. 1 singles for the host Estancia High boys tennis

team, which defeated Golden West League foe Ocean View, 11-7,

Thursday.

Benny Edles and Nick Aguirre each won two sets for the Eagles

(6-5, 5-2 in league). Bryce McKendry and Nick Cox claimed two doubles

sets.

Tars, Downey deadlock

* SOFTBALL: Rain in the top of the eighth inning caused umpires to

halt play, forcing Newport Harbor High and visiting Downey to a 1-1

nonleague softball tie Thursday.

There was one out with the bases empty when the drops began to

fall and play was stopped.

Both teams scored their run in the first inning.

Sasha Grumman singled in Julianne Bass, who had reached on a

single, with two outs in the first for Newport (7-6-1). Grumman’s

single was the third of four straight singles in the inning.

Junior Ashley Gleason struck out five in 7 1/3 innings, allowing

four hits and six walks.

Newport visits Aliso Niguel to open Sea View League play April 13.

* TENNIS: The Corona del Mar High boys tennis team clinched a

rain-shortened 10-5 Pacific Coast League victory over visiting

University Thursday.

Wesley Miller and Spencer Reitz swept in singles for the Sea Kings

(14-0, 2-0 in league). Corona del Mar was without junior Carsten

Ball, who left for Palm Springs to prepare for the Easter Bowl.

Sailors win in three

* VOLLEYBALL: Junior Brett Perrine recorded 13 kills to help lead

the Newport Harbor High boys volleyball team to a 25-15, 26-24, 25-19 Sea View League victory over visiting Irvine Thursday.

Morgan Govaars added six kills, while Jon Langford and Ted Slater

contributed five each for the Sailors (10-6, 2-0 in league).

Adam Schlesinger led Newport with 42 assists.
