Nuggets, Kings and Trojans get opening wins

The Nuggets, Kings and Trojans opened play in the city of Laguna

Beach’s Junior Basketball League with victories in games played at

the Laguna Beach High gymnasium.

The league is open to youngsters grades 5 through 8.

Nuggets 59, Ducks 44

The Nuggets, coached by Sean Bedrick, were 59-44 winners over the

Ducks.

Daniel Morrison, who averaged 20.7 points per game in 2003, began

the new season with a 34-point effort.

Jeffrey Chan scored 16 points -- which included a six for eight

performance at the free throw line -- and Sean Dorse added seven

points for the Nuggets.

Coach Joshua Cedeno’s Ducks were led by Dylan Doumeng who scored

18 points, including five of six free throws, and Marcus Hairston’s

16 points.

Kings 42, White Team 40

In the day’s most tightly contested contest, the Kings nipped the

White Team, 42-40.

Carter Russ took game scoring honors for Coach Bobby Monroe’s

Kings with 18 points and Jason House scored eight points.

John Palfreyman and Austin Hyden each scored 10 points and Dylan

Roley hit a pair of three-point baskets and finished with nine

points, for the Cataldo Alessi-coached White Team.

Trojans defeat Lakers, Artists

The Trojans played two games -- and came away with a pair of

victories.

In their first outing, the Trojans, coached by Brian Bergen, used

Bryce Healey’s 27 points to get past Coach Matt Renault’s Lakers,

72-53.

Dylan McDonald hit four, three-point baskets and finished with 17

points and Lance Knapp hit a pair of three-pointers and finished with

11 points for the Trojans.

The Trojans followed that win with a 55-37 victory over the

Artists. McDonald netted 22 points and Clay Knapp scored 18.

The Artists, coached by Michael Kote, got 10 points from Kevin

Buck and six from Alec Jaffe.
