Kovacevic earns All-CIF honors

Laguna Beach High junior Ivan Kovacevic was named this week to the

All-CIF-Southern Section Division IV-AA boys’ basketball team.

Kovacevic was one of 10 players named to the second team -- and

the only Orange County player on the squad.

He becomes the first Laguna boys basketball player to be named

All-CIF since Travis Hanour made first team and Chris Menker second

team in Division IV, in 2000.

“I think his being named All-CIF is awesome,” Laguna Coach Mark

Hill said. “Obviously, he had an outstanding year for us. He’s been a

leader for us all year. This is a great recognition for him and he

deserves every ounce of it.”

Kovacevic was a multi-faceted player in 2003-04. He played nearly

every position, primarily at point guard and forward.

He averaged 15.8 points per game and 10.6 rebounds.

“This honor makes me appreciate more what our team accomplished

and what I’ve done this year,” Kovacevic said. “It’s a real honor,

and it motivates me to do even better in my senior year.”

Skimboarder opens season with win

Laguna Beach’s Bill Bryan captured first-place in the first

skimboard contest of the 2004 season when he won the third annual

Solag Pro-Am Skimboard Extravaganza held in Laguna Beach.

Bryan, competing for Victoria Skimboards, won the event by

catching the side wash, connecting to the incoming waves and wrapping

the barrel.

Brandon Sears, also of Victoria Skimboards, captured repeat

in-and-out rides in the surf, and finished in second-place.

Austin Bleiweiss also had a big day and he dominated the waves

with his backside snaps off the lip.

The finals came down to a battle between Bryan, Sears, George

Bryan and Grady Archbold, the latter who had the “biggest air” of the

day to win $50 from Skim magazine.

The final Pro results: 1. Bill Bryan; 2. Brandon Sears; 3. George

Bryan; 4. Grady Archbold; 5. Paulo Prietto; 6. Morgan Just.
