David Young, who has been on the board of directors for the Festival

of Arts since 1954, is being honored for his commitment to the arts

in Laguna Beach and his dedication for volunteering.

awards, “Orange County Arts Cultural Legacy Award for Community

Visionary,” from Arts Orange County and the “Spirit of Volunteerism

Award,” from the Orange County Volunteer Center.

Laguna sailor helps rescue man from ocean

Laguna sailor Roy Reineman saved the life of a capsized kayaker in

the middle of a sailboat race on March 20.

Reineman, 55, and the crew of the Violetta de la Mar were

participating in the Balboa Yacht Club’s 66 Series competition when

they found Charles Negus, a 71-year-old Newport Beach resident adrift

about one mile off of the Santa Ana River Jetty, Orange County

Sherrif’s Sgt. Mike Scalise said.

A description of the rescue on the Yacht Club’s website indicates

Reineman and the Violetta’s crew recovered a 71-year-old man who was

suffering from hypothermia after he lost hold of his kayak and was

swimming in the Pacific for about two hours.

The Orange County Sherrif’s Harbor Patrol identified the kayaker

as Newport Beach resident Charles Negus. Negus was aided by deputies

Terry Smith and Dave Lamphere who arrived in a fire boat after the

Violetta’s crew called 911 and transported to Hoag Hospital.

Scalise said Negus probably would not have made it through the

accident if not for Reineman and the Violetta.

“This guy was in pretty bad shape. I don’t know how long he could

have survived,” Scalise said.
