Presenting checks to charities

JIM DE BOOM

Harbor Mesa Lions has raised almost $12,000 this year and will be

presenting the funds to local charities at its Monday meeting at the

Costa Mesa County Club.

“I am thankful for the community support our club has had in

helping us help those charities that mean so much to our city,” said

Joan Parks, club president.

These funds are raised each year by events such as a Casino Night,

Spaghetti Splash Dinner, Lucy and Ethyl’s Bingo Parlor night, candy

sales and the Fish Fry. Among the organizations Parks will be

presenting checks to are the Westside Boys and Girls Club; Eastside

Boys and Girls Club; Someone Cares Soup Kitchen; SOS Free Medical and

Dental Clinic; Orange Coast College Child Care Center; Project LOOK;

Orange Coast Interfaith Shelter; Youth Employment Services; Families

of Costa Mesa and various Lions’-sponsored projects. The dinner

begins at 6:30 p.m.

NEWPORT ENSENADA RACE

People can view the start of the famous Newport to Ensenada

sailboat race aboard the American Privateer Schooner Lynx on April

23. Be a part of the race fleet and play an active role aboard the

Lynx as well.

The Lynx is an interactive, hands-on experience, and you can

volunteer for an active role in raising sails, tacking and steering

Newport Beach’s very own tall ship. The Lynx is also fitted with

eight cannons, so there is bound to be some cannon fire.

The Lynx departs at 10:30 a.m. from the dock of the Newport Harbor

Nautical Museum, returning at 3 p.m. to the museum. Food and

beverages will be provided. Tickets are priced at $100 for adults,

$50 for children ages 5 to 12. Sorry, no children under 5 years old.

Funds raised will support the educational programs at the Nautical

Museum and the Lynx. To purchase tickets or to learn more, call (949)

723-7814.

VIETNAM MEMORIAL

WALL AT PACIFIC VIEW

The moving three-quarter scale Vietnam Memorial Wall will be on

display for viewing at Pacific View Cemetery April 16 to 18. The

opening ceremonies for the wall will be held at 10 a.m. on April 16

with the involvement of American Legion Post 291, while a special

candlelight evening ceremony will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday

and closing ceremony at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

The wall is something special that the whole family should

experience. Call (949) 467-3720 for more information.

GOLF FOR SHELTER

The Orange Coast Interfaith Shelter is holding its first-ever golf

tournament on May 3 at Mesa Verde Country Club in Costa Mesa, board

president Mike Murphy said. The day begins with a putting contest at

10:30 a.m., shotgun start at noon, dinner, awards and auction at 6

p.m. Golf is $375 a person.

If you don’t want to golf, how about buying one of 500 raffle

tickets at $100, with the lucky winner receiving a 2004 Mini Cooper.

Or you can attend the dinner and auction for $45 a person. For more

information, contact Mindy Bees at (949) 631-7130 or
