‘Eaters blank UC Riverside

UC Irvine senior Jon Endrikat won a tightly contested singles match

against Norman Tam in the Anteaters men’s tennis team’s 7-0 victory

over visiting UC Riverside Saturday in Big West Conference action.

Endrikat defeated Tam, 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 in the tiebreaker. UCI (8-6)

won two of three doubles matches to clinch the doubles point.

Junior Brian Morton, a Corona del Mar High product, defeated Brent

Davis, 6-4, 6-3 in No. 2 singles.

UCI sweeps USC

* VOLLEYBALL: Jimmy Pelzel had 15 kills and Matt Webber added 12

as the 10th-ranked UC Irvine men’s volleyball team swept No. 15 USC,

30-28, 30-22, 30-27, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match

Saturday night on the Trojans’ court.

Blake Tippett (Newport Harbor) had a match-high 17 kills for USC (6-19, 4-14 in the MPSF). UCI improved to 11-16, 5-13.

OCC seeded first

* CREW: The Orange Coast College men’s crew will be seeded first

heading into the final of the San Diego Crew Classic after completing

the best time during the preliminary races Saturday at Mission Bay.

The Pirates, who will be vying for the California Cup today at

1:30 p.m., remained undefeated and won their heat in 6:16.16, 11

seconds faster than second-place San Diego State. Minnesota had the

second best time of the day, 6:16.7. UC Irvine won its heat in

6:20.2.

OCC Coach Larry Moore predicted his men’s crew will win today.

“I never like to go out on a limb, but they should win the title,”

Moore said. “I’ll be surprised if they don’t win by a length or two.

But they still have to go out and perform.”

The Pirates’ junior varsity and novice eights also qualified for

today’s finals.

The OCC men’s crew includes, coxswain Ashley Thomas, a Costa Mesa

High product, stroke Danny Johnson, Tyler Wilcox, Roman Rukosuyev,

Jake Carr, Wes Temple, Steve Egner, J.T. Eger and on bow, Brian

Moran.

Vanguard earns split

* BASEBALL: The Vanguard University baseball pulled off an upset

Saturday in the second game of a Golden State Athletic Conference

doubleheader against visiting Biola, edging the Eagles in extra

innings, 2-1, as Adam Yoder singled with the bases loaded in the

bottom of the eighth inning. The game was scheduled for seven

innings.

Highly regarded Biola (24-6-1, 13-5 in the GSAC) defeated Vanguard

(9-25, 3-15) in the opener, 7-4, in 10 innings.

Marcus Harris was the Vanguard star in the nightcap, tossing a

four-hitter over eight innings with four strikeouts and one walk.

Yoder was 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Jason Searle, Nikolaus Crouch and

Isaac Salazar had two hits apiece for the Lions, who host Cal Baptist

at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

In the first game, VU centerfielder Salazar was 4 for 5 with two

RBIs.

Estancia outlasted

* BASEBALL: The Estancia High baseball team was deadlocked with

visiting La Sierra through four innings Saturday, but the Mountain

View League’s Eagles scored nine in the fifth en route to a 14-3

victory in the first round of the Pride of the Coast tournament.

Senior Cullen Crom had two of Estancia’s five hits. Crom, Eric

Scheafer and Evan Van Geem each scored to help the hosts (1-9) match

La Sierra early.

LA Sierra’s Brian Bonomo went 4 for 4 with three doubles, a home

run, four runs and four RBIs.

Estancia plays a team to be determined Monday at a time to be

determined.

Lions outmuscle foe

* SOFTBALL: Vanguard University freshman left fielder Jennifer

Olvera blasted a three-run homer in each game as the Lions swept a

nonconference softball doubleheader at Whittier Friday.

Olvera’s fifth-inning dinger broke a 5-5 tie in the second game to

key an 8-6 Vanguard win, after her bomb, one of three Lion homers in

the first game, helped key a 12-0 blowout.

Heather Durham went 4 for 4 with four RBIs, a homer and a double

in the first game, in which Ashley Mauro was 2 for 4 with two RBIs

and a homer.

Krystal Keltner allowed three hits and walked just one in a

five-inning, complete-game shutout in the opener.

Vanguard improved to 25-17, while Whittier fell to 4-24.
