Locals advance at Easter Bowl

Corona del Mar High junior Carsten Ball defeated Andrew Bailey of

Tallahassee, Fla., 6-2, 6-3, in the round of 32 at the Easter Bowl

national tennis championships at the Riviera Resort in Palm Springs.

Ball, the No. 7 seed in the boys 18s singles draw, needs one more

victory to earn a potential quarterfinal date against No. 2-seeded

Donald Young.

Newport Beach resident Alexa Glatch, the No. 10 seed in the girls

18s singles draw, is scheduled to meet No. 8-seeded Andrea Remynse of

Battle Creek, Mich. in today’s round of 16.

Sailors come up short

* BASEBALL: Matt Nino’s two-out, three-run homer keyed a four-run

first inning to help visiting West Campus earn an 8-3 win over

Newport Harbor in the consolation quarterfinals of the Pride of the

Coast baseball tournament Monday.

Senior Andre Pinesett was 3 for 3 with an RBI and one run for the

Sailors (7-6), who meet Paramount today at 3 p.m. at Costa Mesa High

in a 13th-place semifinal.

Joey Cantarella was 2 for 2 for the Sailors, while teammates Chris

Thompson and Kenny Knight had one RBI apiece.

Scheafer shines in loss

* BASEBALL: The Estancia High baseball team outhit visiting Grace

Brethren, but still came away with an 8-1 loss Monday in a

consolation quarterfinal at the Pride of the Coast tournament.

Estancia senior Eric Scheafer went 3 for 3, while freshman Trevor

McDonald and Evan Van Geem also had two hits apiece for the Eagles

(1-10).

Estancia plays host to Santiago today at 3 p.m.

final day of the two-day Palm Springs invitational two shots off the

pace of leader Los Altos.

Pirates turned back

* GOLF: Host Santiago Canyon College earned a 381-405 victory over

Orange Coast Monday in an Orange Empire Conference men’s golf match

at Los Serranos in Chino Hills.

Jason Cassidy shot 5-over-par 77 to pace OCC scorers, who also

included Peter Baker (79) and Shaun Vickers (80).
