Eagles soar to success at Mount SAC Relays

The Mesa View Middle School track and field team returned to the

Mount SAC Relays for the first time in 11 years, and the appearance

at last Friday’s event yielded plenty of success.

With 52 Eagle athletes competing in Walnut, Mesa View, under

coaches Kelly Painter and Mike Vlachos, returned back to Huntington

Beach with 83 medals.

Mesa View, the first school in the Ocean View School District to

participate in the relays in 1985, had not competed in the event

since 1993.

“Although we had told them this was the largest track meet in the

United States, their eyes were big as saucers when they first viewed

the 7,000 participants,” Painter said. “Kelly Self put everyone at

ease when she crossed the finish line in the 1,500 meters to give us

our first medal of the day.”

Self finished third in the 1,500 in the girls’ Eighth Grade

Division.

Marine View’s Celso Arcos established a new meet record in the

boys’ Eighth Grade Division 1,500 meters with a time of 4:44. Mesa

View’s Josh Smith also shattered the previous record and finished

second behind Arcos.
