Dodgers’ Capaldi tosses one-hitter

The Dodgers defeated the Angels, 5-2, March 31 and moved into sole

possession of first place in the National League of Newport Beach

Little League’s Majors Division.

Ben Capaldi allowed just one hit in pitching a complete game and

improved to 5-0 this season. The Dodgers’ offense was led by Doug

Watt, Nick Couchot and Andrew Machoskie, who each tallied two hits.

Watt also played solidly at catcher.

Jamie Heineke pitched six strong innings and had the Angels’ only

hit.

In other Majors action:

* Giants 3, Yankees 2:

Sandon Griffin pitched six innings without giving up a walk in the

Giants’ victory March 30.

With the game tied, 2-2, in the bottom of the sixth, Patrick

Vorwerck (2 for 3) knocked in Kyle Jensen with no outs for the

winning run. Jensen also finished 2 for 3.

Taylor Ross doubled in Griffin and Austin Barvin, who had both

reached base on walks, to jump start the Giants’ offense in the

second.

The Giants played a stellar game defensively, led by Daniel Noto,

Cort Hastings and Nathan Wagner in the infield.

The Yankees were powered offensively by Brian Ford and Alex

Mainthow with two hits apiece.

* Reds 10 Red Sox 0:

Led by the pitching of Sean Tokuyama and Chris Alvarez, the Reds

remained undefeated with the win.

Tokuyama and Alvarez combined to fan eight in four innings.

Tokuyama led the Reds’ offense with two hits and two runs scored

and had help from Mike Borchard (double, three runs scored). Mattias

Russo Larsson added a double and two runs.

Joey Booth and Brennan Anderson each added a hit and run scored

while David Adamson hit the ball hard for the Red Sox and Wes Nielsen

pitched strong in the losing effort.

* Reds 5 Cardinals 3:

Borchard pitched three scoreless innings, went 3 for 3 and had

four RBI’s to lead the undefeated Reds to victory.

Led by the strong pitching of Michael Bloom -- seven strikeouts in

three innings -- the Cardinals entered the fourth inning leading,

3-1.

In the top of the fourth, after David Moore reached first on a

walk and Tokuyama was a hit by a pitch, Borchard doubled to score

both runners and later stole home to take the lead for good.

Tokuyama also pitched well and he, along with Allen Brown and Jack

Schloemer, contributed hits.

Defensively, the Reds were led by Russo Larsson and Alvarez. Danny

Dunlap led the Cardinals’ offense, singling in two runs.

* Yankees 10, Angels 0:

Sam Cubiero struck out nine, walked two and allowed four singles

in five innings to lead the Yankees on the mound.

Offensively, the Yankees were powered by John Christian and

Chandler Mitchell, who each had two hits. Ford, Eric Morris, Mainthow

(double), Zach Socoloske, Eric Hallett and Cubiero (double) added

hits.

J.D. Dawn went 2 for 2 while for the Angels while Blake Thomsen

robbed a Yankee of an extra-base hit with a strong catch in center

field.
