Breakers lose lead, fall to Timberwolves

The Laguna Beach High boys’ volleyball team won its first two Pacific

Coast League outings before Northwood broke through to hand the

Breakers their first loss.

The Timberwolves came on strong down the stretch Tuesday to pull

out a 25-20, 20-25, 17-25, 25-23, 15-12 home court victory.

The win put Northwood alone at the top of the league standings,

while Laguna fell to 2-1.

The teams met again Thursday. Laguna won the opening game, then

won decisively in the third game to take a 2-1 lead in games.

The teams battled at each other in the decisive fifth game, with

Northwood eventually getting the win.

Luke Morris paced Laguna with 18 kills and 18 digs.

The Timberwolves got a huge performance from Brett Vanlandingham

who finished with 29 kills, 13 assists and eight blocks.

Laguna opened the PCL season with an easy, 25-6, 25-5, 25-15

victory over visiting Calvary Chapel.

The Breakers followed that win with a home court triumph over

Tesoro.

In girls’ softball, Laguna was upended Tuesday by visiting

University, 6-3, in PCL play.

In nonleague play, Laguna was no-hit by Brethren Christian’s

Jennifer Winford as the Warriors posted a 3-0 nonleague victory.

In a previous nonleague game, the Breakers were blanked by

visiting Saddleback Valley Christian, 4-0.

Laguna mustered just one hit in the game off winning pitcher Katie

Finley, who had 15 strikeouts.

In track and field, Laguna’s boys fell to Northwood, 104-15, and

the girls also lost to Northwood, 113-13, in PCL action.
