Pilot Cup openings available

The fifth annual Daily Pilot Cup is set to be begin June 1, yet many

schools within Newport Beach and Costa Mesa are still unrepresented.

Each public and private elementary school within the city limits

of Newport Beach and Costa Mesa is eligible to participate. The

school must appoint a liaison to communicate with the tournament

director, Kirk McIntosh.

All liaisons must be established by April 15 and thereafter attend

a meeting to discuss school colors, receive registration forms and

discuss tournament rules. Any school that is not represented will not

be eligible to play in the tournament.

In an effort to balance the competition the Pilot Cup will have

two divisions in each age group. The gold division will be for the

larger schools and the silver division for the small schools and

second teams from the large schools.

Each division will receive individual medals for the winners and

finalists. The gold division winners will retain the perpetual

trophy.

The tournament will continue to have boys and girls divisions for

third- and fourth-grade and fifth- and sixth-grade teams. The third-

and fourth-grade divisions will play nine on nine, while the fifth-

and sixth-graders will play 11 versus 11.

The following schools have not established a liaison: California,

College Park, Killybrooke, Newport Heights, Pomona, Rea, Sonora,

Victoria, Whittier, Wilson, St. John the Baptist, Calvary Chapel,

Carden Hall and TeWinkle.

Last year, 96 teams participated, representing 24 public and

private schools within Newport Beach and Costa Mesa. Total number of

children involved was estimated at 1,750.
