‘Eaters trounce Toreros

The UC Irvine baseball team, ranked seventh by in the country by

Collegiate Baseball, pounded 16 hits en route to a 14-4 nonconference

victory over host University of San Diego Tuesday.

The Anteaters (23-7-1) jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first inning,

including a two-run home run by Erik Johnson -- his fourth this

season -- as eight men went to the plate.

Matt Anderson and Brett Dalton each had three hits and three runs

scored for UCI, which snapped San Diego’s six-game winning streak.

The ‘Eaters get set to face fifth-ranked Long Beach State in a key

Big West Conference three-game series that begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday

at Blair Field in Long Beach.

Sailors sweep Wolverines

* VOLLEYBALL: Junior Brett Perrine slammed 13 kills while senior

Jon Langford tallied 11 to lead the visiting Newport Harbor High boys

volleyball team to a 25-14, 25-21, 25-23 victory over Aliso Niguel

Tuesday to remain undefeated in Sea View League play.

Langford added three blocks while Morgan Govaars tallied five digs

and six kills. Gavin Galey slammed seven kills to go with two digs

and Adam Schlesinger finished with 42 assists and three blocks for

Newport (11-6, 3-0 in league).

Pirates move on in OEC

* TENNIS: Four singles players and one doubles team from the

Orange Coast College women’s tennis team advanced after the first day

of the Orange Empire Conference tournament at Santa Ana Tuesday.

The top-seeded team of Coast’s Leah Becker and Sabrina Tanamal

defeated Riverside’s Jocelyn Holt and Beca Racataian, 6-1, 6-1, in

the second round to advance to the doubles quarterfinals Thursday.

Becker (seeded third) defeated Irvine Valley’s Leili Iranmanesh,

6-1, 6-1, while Tanamal, the No. 5 seed, downed Riverside’s Lisa

Restivo, 6-1, 6-0.

Both advance to the round of 16 along with teammates Darlena Tran

and Kai Moriyama. Tran defeated ninth-seeded Eliza Francisco

(Saddleback), 6-2, 4-6, 6-0, while Moriyama eliminated Fullerton’s

Alison Robb, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1.

Singles matches begin at 1 p.m. Thursday while Tanamal and Becker

face seventh-seeded Allison McKinney and Cary Pacheco at 3:30 p.m.

OCC’s Hoevel advances

* TENNIS: Mike Hoevel defeated Andrew Lee, 6-0, 6-0, for Orange

Coast College’s lone singles win in the first round of the men’s

Orange Empire Conference tournament at Cypress Tuesday.

Hoevel teamed with Scott Fielder to defeat Bobby Burns and Don

Lacsun of Riverside, 6-0, 6-0, in the first round of doubles before

losing to Jason Villwak and Brian Newell of Saddleback, 6-4, 6-1.

Fielder lost to Fullerton’s Gerald Araso, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5), in

singles.

Hoevel faces John Mousel of Irvine Valley at 1 p.m. Thursday in

the second round.

VU routs Coyotes

* BASEBALL: Adam Yoder, Isaac Salazar and Matt Franco each had

three hits for visiting Vanguard University, which humbled host Cal

State San Bernardino, 12-3, in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday.

Scott Martin went 2 for 4, including a two-run home run in the

first inning and finished with three RBIs. Yoder and Jason Searle

each had two RBIs for the Lions (10-26).

Michael Guernsey allowed five hits and three runs while striking

out six and walking three in five innings to earn his fourth win this

season. Marcus Harris, Searle and Brent Erickson combined to pitch

four innings of two-hit relief for the Lions.

Aliso slices Newport

* GOLF: Newport Harbor’s Davis Pemstein shared medalist honors

with two Aliso Niguel golfers at 3-over 36, but the Sailors lost the

Sea View League match, 202-212, at El Niguel Country Club Tuesday.

Michael Benvenuti (42), Rhett Palmer (41), Chris Willard (44) and

Brandon Sowers (46) also scored for the Sailors (7-7, 2-4 in league),

who will face Aliso (13-2, 4-1) today at Santa Ana CC.

Sea Kings lose opener

* SOFTBALL: Corona del Mar softball opened Pacific Coast League

play with a loss at Tesoro, 6-3, Tuesday. Ann Klunder hit an RBI

double in the sixth for the Sea Kings, but Tesoro outfielder Nicole

Clements knocked in four RBI to lead the Titans. Corona del Mar

pitcher Michelle Tolfa struck out four batters. The Titans (10-7

overall, 1-0 league) travel to Corona del Mar (6-4, 0-1) Thursday.

McDonald one-hits Tars

* SOFTBALL: Kelly McDonald limited the visiting Newport Harbor

High softball team to one hit and helped Aliso Niguel earn a 1-0

victory to begin Sea View League play Tuesday.

Ashley Gleason, Newport’s starting pitcher, singled for Newport’s

only hit with one out in the fourth inning. She stole second, but was

stranded. Newport (7-7-1) didn’t have another baserunner.

Tesoro edges CdM

* GOLF: The Corona del Mar High boys golf team nearly dealt Tesoro

its first Pacific Coast League loss, but the Titans came away with

the win, 200-204, at Coto de Caza Tuesday.

Ben Tilsen shot even-par 36, while Alex Chikovani (39), Jamie

Bloom (40), Rob Ury (44) and Eric Miller (45) also scored for the Sea

Kings (4-9, 3-2 in league). The Titans improved to 5-0 in league.
