Mesa holds off Hauser

The Costa Mesa High baseball team scored four runs in the first

inning and held on for a 5-2 Golden West League victory over

crosstown rival Estancia on the Eagles’ diamond Wednesday.

Costa Mesa starter Daniel Cooper allowed just two hits and

improved to 2-4, while Justin Peterson held the Eagles hitless and

scoreless when he entered in the fifth and earned his third save of

the season.

Estancia pitcher Jeremy Hauser scattered five hits and struck out

two in his complete game that saw him struggle early, but rebound

with a solid outing.

Peterson sparked the Mustangs (8-7, 3-1 in league) with a base hit

in the first inning. Gary Gonzalez then drew a walk and Cooper plated

Peterson on a hit-and-run single. Andrew Sanford followed with an RBI

double, and after Ryan Szwast was hit by the pitch, Dylan Hunter came

up with a two-run single to give Costa Mesa a 4-0 lead.

Estancia (2-12, 0-5) had the bases loaded with two outs in the

first inning, but scored just one run. The Eagles also had runners on

second and third with one out in the second, but could not capitalize

on the opportunity.

Aliso holds off Newport

* Newport Harbor High’s baseball team had the tying runs on base

with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, but visiting Aliso

Niguel withstood the rally and escaped with a 5-3 Sea View League

victory Wednesday.

Newport (9-7, 3-3 in league) had runners at second and third with

one out, but Aliso reliever Ryan Stipes struck out a batter and

induced a pop out to end the game. Newport’s Brandon Jasper doubled

in Patrick Keehan to trim the Aliso lead to 5-3 earlier in the

seventh.

Andre Pinesett hit his first home of the season -- a solo shot in

the sixth -- and finished 2 for 3 while Jasper also went 2 for 3 with

an RBI. Keehan went 1 for 2 with a double and two runs scored.

The Sailors left nine men on base.

Newport senior Joey Cantarella struck out eight and walked two in

a complete game. Only two of Aliso’s five runs were earned.

The same two teams face each other at 3:15 p.m. Friday on the

Wolverines’ field.
