Sun Devils skate to state title

The Huntington Beach Sun Devils headed north to San Jose to play at

the California Amateur Hockey Assn. State Championships, and they

returned to Surf City with the Midget A Division title in tow.

The Sun Devils went 4-0 in division play, which was open to 15-

and 16-year old players.

The three-day tournament attracted teams from northern and

southern California, and four teams competed for the Midget A

Division crown.

In their tournament opener, the Sun Devils downed the Oakland

Bears, 4-2, with Andrew Doherty scoring a hat trick.

They followed that win with an 8-1 whipping of the Tri Valley Blue

Devils. In that triumph, Doherty and Shane Case each recorded a hat

trick.

Troy Aguilar got a hat trick of his own in the semifinal round, a

5-1 victory over the Desert Coyotes.

Christopher Giczewski also scored for the Sun Devils, who took on

the Coyotes once again for the division championship.

In the final, the Sun Devils prevailed, 4-2. Aguilar led the way

with a pair of goals and Josh Hackworth and Wesley Ott each scored

once.

The Sun Devils entered the tournament with a 17-0-1 season record

and concluded the year with a 21-0-1 mark to go undefeated in the

Southern California Hockey Assn.

The team is composed of Doherty, Case, Aguilar, Giczewski,

Hackworth, Ott, Kevin Chen, Brent Dooley, goalie J.C. Gutierrez, Matt

Kleinhans, Ryan Leveille, Dillon Parsons, Dustin Parsons, Shawn

Sullivan, Jared Yonekura, Brett Young, head coach William Ott,

assistant coach Larry Giczewski, defensive coach Andrew Kleinhans and

team manager Robert Doherty.

In Fountain Valley Pony Baseball action:

The Reds and the Cubs met for a claim to second-place in Fountain

Valley Pony Baseball Minor Division play, and it was the Reds who

emerged with an 8-6 victory.

The division continues to be led by the A’s, who came back against

the Brewers to post an 8-5 win.

With the Cubs now residing in third-place with no games scheduled

during spring break, there is a three-way tie for fourth-place

between the Dodgers, Mariners and Yankees.

In other division action, the Orioles downed the Mariners 7-5, the

Astros handled the Yankees 9-5 and the Dodgers rolled past the Red

Sox, 16-4.
