Laguna Beach High evened the score with Northwood in Pacific Coast

League play by posting a come-from-behind, 22-25, 25-16, 21-25,

26-24, 15-12 victory over the visiting Timberwolves.

Two nights prior, Northwood had handed Laguna its first league

loss.

By avenging that loss, Laguna improved to 3-1 in league heading

into spring break.

After dropping a tough first game, Laguna routed the Timberwolves

in game No. 2, despite having seven service errors.

Luke Morris led the Breakers in the game win with six kills.

The teams were locked in a standstill at 20-20 in the third game,

before Northwood went on to post a 25-21 win.

Down 2-1 in games, Laguna found itself in a hole in game No. 2, as

it trailed, 16-11.

The Breakers, however, rallied from a 16-11 deficit to tie the

game at 19-19, and Trey Chapel and Chris Hoffman provided the

critical points as Laguna rallied for a 26-24 win.

The fifth game mirrored the previous four, as the teams were

knotted at 8-8. Laguna gained the momentum from then on and pulled

out to a 13-9 lead before coasting to the win.

The win boosted Laguna’s best-of-5 record to 5-3. The Breakers are

9-5 in matches that are best-of-three or better and, at 3-1, are tied

with Northwood for second-place in the Pacific Coast League

standings.

Laguna faces a big challenge next week, beginning with University

visiting Dugger Gymnasium Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. match.

On Thursday, April 22, the Breakers entertain Corona del Mar in a

3:30 p.m. start.

Laguna and Corona del Mar previously met at the Orange County

Tournament, where the Breakers narrowly defeated the Sea Kings,

25-20, 21-25, 17-15.

In boys’ tennis, Laguna was defeated by visiting Edison, 12-6, in

a nonleague match prior to spring break.

The Breakers’ top doubles team of Kyle Paxson and Thomas Shubert

earned a sweep of their Edison opponents by scores of 6-1, 6-1, 6-2.

The Chargers won the match behind sweeps from its three singles

players, Ryan Malawy, Thomas Shubert and Victor Jacobs, who usually

plays doubles.

Four Laguna athletic teams will return to action next week when

school resumes.

The girls’ softball team will host Tesoro Tuesday and Corona del

Mar on Thursday. The track and field teams go up against Calvary

Chapel Thursday at Golden West College, the swim teams visit

Huntington Beach Thursday for a nonleague meet, and the boys’ golf

team takes on Tesoro Tuesday at Coto de Caza Country Club and Corona

del Mar Thursday at Newport County Club.
