Coffee Break focuses on teen sex

“Risky Business: Sex and Your Teen,” is the topic for the PTA’s

Coffee Break from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Pelican Room at

the Surf and Sand.

It’s sex education for parents, and offers tools to help parents

with their teens and pre-teens about sexual issues.

Leslie Dixon, executive director and founder of “The Birds and

Bees Connection” is the guest speaker.

Dixon will go over startling facts, truths and myths,

misconceptions about sex, sexuality, intercourse and making love,

what kids know and what they need to know. She will also suggest a

simple guide for questions to ask their teen and tools to overcome

the fears about initiating the conversation.

The workshop is $5 and includes coffee, tea and muffins. For

information, call Judith Anderson at (949) 494-0447. Surf and Sand is

at 1555 S. Coast Highway.

Student is first to go to state bee

Thurston eighth-grade student Fletcher Berryman became the first

student at the school to qualify for the State Geography Bee

organized by National Geographic. Fletcher went to Sacramento two

weeks ago to compete. The competition includes physical, political

and cultural geography. He did not place in the top 10 of the

competition.

Fletcher first won the school-level competition. He then had to

take a written exam to qualify for the state level. More than 1,000

school-level winners took the exam but only 102 qualified.
