Sea Kings remain perfect in league

Corona del Mar High’s boys volleyball team faced a familiar foe

Friday, beating Tesoro, 25-23, 25-16, 24-26, 25-18, in Pacific Coast

League action.

The two teams played Wednesday at Tesoro, with CdM sweeping three

straight games. The schools played twice this week because they were

the only two not on spring break.

“It was unusual circumstances,” Sea Kings Coach Steve Conti said

of the back-to-back matches.

Corona del Mar (11-7, 4-0 in league) was led by the Welch twins.

Kevin Welch collected 16 kills and four blocks while Tom Welch paced

all hitters with 17 kills. Senior Dominic Rubino finished the night

with 39 assists for the Sea Kings.

Tesoro fought back from an 18-12 deficit in the third game to pull

out a victory, but Corona del Mar dominated the fourth game.

Morton shines in loss

* SOFTBALL: Estancia High sophomore Heather Morton went 3 for 3

with four RBIs, but the Eagles softball team lost, 8-7, to Golden

West League host Orange, which scored the game-winning run in the

seventh inning, Friday.

Rebecca Kaplan scored three runs for the Eagles (4-10, 1-5 in

league). Orange improved to 10-4, 3-2.

Back Bay in playoffs

* RUGBY: The Back Bay Rugby Club, based in Newport Beach, has

qualified for the USA club rugby division I playoffs, which begin

April 24.

The Back Bay club will travel to either Canton, Mass., or Grand

Rapids, Mich., to compete. The playoff teams will be vying to play in

the championship game, which will be at the Back Bay club’s home

field, Peninsula Park on A Street near the Balboa Pier.

The Back Bay Rugby Club, 7-4 in USA Rugby Division I, will end its

regular season at 1 p.m. today, when it hosts Old Mission Beach

Athletic Club, a highly regarded squad from San Diego.

Spring Classic tonight

* SPEEDWAY: Costa Mesa opens its gates at 6 p.m. tonight for the

Spring Classic at the Orange County Fairgrounds. Extreme Freestyle

Motocross jumpers and professional Speedway Motorcycle racers will

kick off the dust and participate in what has been referred to as the

“spring practice” due to the fact that so many are shaking off the

rust of the off-season. Saturday May 1 is the season opener. Call

UCI’s Bentzer honored

* TENNIS: UC Irvine junior Anna Bentzer has been named Big West

Conference women’s tennis Athlete of the Week for the week of April

5-11.

Bentzer defeated UC Riverside No. 1 singles player Michelle

Bayronneau, 6-1, 6-1, to improve to 16-3 in singles.

She also paired with Jayme Hu to earn an 8-0 doubles win against

UCR.

Bentzer, from Stockholm, Sweden, is ranked No. 102 nationally by

College Tennis Online. This is her fourth Athlete of the Week honor

this season.
