Cline has huge day

Orange Coast College freshman shortstop Matt Cline went 6 for 6 and

drove in six runs, the former a school single-game record, to lead

the host Pirates to a 16-5 Orange Empire Conference baseball win over

Fullerton Sunday.

Cline, who was a home run shy of the cycle, accounted for more

than one-third of the Pirates’ 15-hit attack, as the hosts collected

eight of the game’s nine extra-base hits.

Sophomore right fielder Jeff Piaskowski was 2 for 3 with a homer a

double and two runs batted in. He also walked and scored four times

for the winners, who improved to 10-17, 2-13 in conference.

Freshman right-hander Brandon Lutgendorf pitched into the eighth

to pick up his second pitching victory in three decisions this

spring. He was the beneficiary of the Pirates’ second-best run

production of the season and second straight double-digit scoring

output.

OCC scored a season-high 17 runs in a March 27 win over Irvine

Valley. The Pirates scored 11 runs in a four-run loss to Fullerton

Friday.

Freshman second baseman Casey McDonald joined the fun for the

hosts, going 2 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs.

Hewko, Belden score

* WATER POLO: Corona del Mar High product Christina Hewko scored

one goal to help Stanford earn a 5-3 Mountain Pacific Sports

Federation women’s water polo victory over host UCLA Sunday.

Hewko is a freshman for the No. 2-ranked Cardinal (17-3), which

earned the No. 2 seed in the MPSF tournament.

Katherine Belden, out of Newport Harbor High, scored a goal for

the No. 3-ranked Bruins (20-4).
