Eagles clinch Golden West League title

The Estancia High boys golf team clinched the Golden West League

championship with a 216-262 victory over Westminster at Mesa Verde

Country Club Tuesday.

Estancia senior Jason Les collected medalist honors, shooting 40

on the par-36 course. Austin Serr (41), Garrett McMasters (44),

Marcus Sostak (45) and Greg Les (46) also contributed to the victory.

The Eagles will now aim to remain undefeated in the Golden West

League as they improved to 10-5, 6-0 in league play. They will face

Ocean View at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club Thursday.

Newport sweeps Hawks

* VOLLEYBALL: The Newport Harbor High boys volleyball team

prepared for its key Sea View League showdown with Woodbridge by

scoring a 25-17, 25-15, 25-10 victory over host Laguna Hills Tuesday.

Seniors Adam Schlesinger and Matt Cheffer led the Sailors in

kills, recording six and four, respectively. Newport Harbor (13-6,

5-0 in league) will host Woodbridge, which is also undefeated in

league, Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

UC Irvine takes second

* GOLF: Angie Won and Minnie Choi both shot 3-over-par on the

final day to help secure a second-place finish for the UC Irvine

women’s golf team in the Big West championships at Tijeras Creek in

Rancho Santa Margarita Tuesday.

Sailors shocks Servite

* GOLF: Chris Willard drained a 30-foot putt on the final hole,

giving the Newport Harbor High boys team a 195-196 nonleague upset

win over Servite at Big Canyon Country Club Tuesday.

Willard’s putt gave him a 4-over-par 40 and sent Servite to just

its second loss of the season in 20 matches. Rhett Palmer shot a

1-under-par 35 to lead Newport (8-8) while teammates Mike Benvenuti

(38) Brandon Sowers (41) and Davis Pemstein (41) contributed to the

victory.

Corona del Mar avenges loss

* GOLF: Corona del Mar High’s boys beat Pacific Coast League rival

Northwood Tuesday, 195-201. The victory was especially sweet for the

Sea Kings (8-10, 5-2 in league) considering the team lost by two

strokes at Northwood (6-2) on Monday.

Chris Arkin led all scores with a 37 for the Timberwolves, but

Alex Chikovani and Eric Miller both shot 3-over-par 38s for CdM. Also

posting scores for the Sea Kings were Ben Pisen and Zach Rabinovich,

both shooting 39, and Jaime Bloom, who shot 41.

Erickson earns 13th save

* BASEBALL: UC Irvine sophomore right-hander Chris Nicoll allowed

just two hits in six scoreless innings and freshman Blair Erickson

later picked up his nation-leading 13th save of the season in the

Anteaters baseball team’s 4-2 nonconference victory over visiting

Pepperdine Tuesday.

Nicoll struck out four and walked one. Erickson, who is one save

from tying the Big West Conference freshman record, struck out three

of the seven batters he faced and allowed one hit.

Third baseman Matt Anderson led UCI’s offense with a 2-for-4

performance that came with two RBIs. Pepperdine, which defeated UCI

twice in Malibu this season, fell to 18-20. The Anteaters (24-10-1)

host a three-game series against University of the Pacific, starting

Friday at 6 p.m.

Joyce ignites Sage sweep

* VOLLEYBALL: Sage Hill School boys volleyball team continued its

strong run through Academy League with a 25-11, 25-22, 25-12 victory

over host Capistrano Valley Christian Tuesday.

Senior outside hitter Kevin Joyce slammed 20 kills to go with

three service aces, 12 digs and two blocks. Macsun Frederick finished

with nine kills and four blocks while Julian Newman-Smith collected

34 assists for Sage Hill (10-1, 8-1 in league).

Singles kind to Eagles

* TENNIS: Nick Aguirre and Scott Braunsdorf each swept in singles

to lead the Estancia High boys tennis team to a 10-8 Golden West League victory over host Santa Ana Tuesday.

Braunsdorf, a sophomore, improved to 26-1 in singles this season.

Benny Edles and the doubles team of Bryce McKendry and Nick Cox

each took two of three sets for the Eagles (8-5, 7-2 in league).

Sailors sweep singles

* TENNIS: Jake Fleming, Charlie Farmer and Tyler Deck all swept

their singles matches for Newport Harbor High’s boys tennis team,

which lost eight of nine doubles sets but still defeated Foothill,

10-8, in a Sea View League match Tuesday.

The singles trio lost just seven games combined while Robert

Khoury and John Cefalia claimed one singles set for Newport (11-5,.

6-1 in league).

CdM remains atop PCL

* TENNIS: The Corona del Mar High boys tennis team showed why it

is ranked No. 1 in CIF Division I, beating Northwood, 15-3, in a

Pacific Coast League match Tuesday.

The Sea Kings (16-0, 4-0 in the PCL) did not lose a singles set,

led by juniors Carsten Ball (6-0, 6-1, 6-0) and Wesley Miller (6-0,

6-1, 6-0). Freshman Ryan Caughren also held on to sweep his

competition.

The doubles competition was dominated by CdM senior Brennan

Roberts and junior Alex Nguyen (6-2, 6-2, 6-3). Northwood fell to

11-4, 3-3. CdM will host Laguna Beach April 27.

Long ball hurts OCC

* BASEBALL: Orange Coast College gave up leadoff home runs in the

sixth and seventh innings and lost to visiting Santa Ana, 4-2, in

Orange Empire Conference play Tuesday.

OCC’s Robbie Blauer knocked in Luke Beck in the fourth and Dan

Sokarda scored from third on a wild pitch to give OCC a 2-1 lead, but

the Dons rallied.

Sage plays small ball

* BASEBALL: Sage Hill School didn’t hit any long balls Tuesday,

but it didn’t need any to defeat Whitney, 8-5.

Senior Tim Wilkins was dominate on the mound, allowing one hit

over four innings while striking out six in his fourth win of the

year. Wilkins also went 2 for 3 at the plate and collected two RBIs.

David Packard and Jordan Salinger also had two RBIs for Sage Hill

(7-7, 4-4 in league).

Pitchers quiet Newport

* SOFTBALL: Sara LaRue and Kelsey Ferguson combined on a

four-hitter to key the Foothill High softball team to a 5-1 Sea View

League win over host Newport Harbor Tuesday.

Ferguson struck out six and walked none in the final 3 1/3 innings

after Newport cut the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth.

Ashley Gleason, who went 2 for 3, scored on an illegal pitch,

Newport Coach Mike Davis said.

Kayleigh Horn and Julianne Bass each had one hit for Newport

(7-9-1, 0-3 in league).

Sea Kings downed

* SOFTBALL: Northwood High needed extra innings to remain

undefeated in the Pacific Coast League Tuesday, beating Corona del

Mar, 4-3. The Sea Kings fell to 6-6, 0-3 in the PCL, while the

Timberwolves stayed perfect in the PCL at 3-0.

CdM took an early lead when freshman Michelle Tolfa knocked in

junior Heather Lohrman.

Chargers best Pirates

* GOLF: Host Cypress College defeated Orange Coast, 390-407, in an

Orange Empire Conference men’s golf match Monday at Cypress Golf

Course.

Joo Namkoong (79), Jason Cassidy (79), Peter Baker (80), Josh Dean

(84) and Shaun Vickers (85) scored for the Pirates, who fell to 8-11,

7-10 in conference.

Lions split pair

* SOFTBALL: Vanguard University split its doubleheader against Cal

State San Bernardino Tuesday, winning 6-0 and losing the second game,

3-0. Lion pitcher Krystal Keltner scattered three hits and Ashley

Mauro hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning in

Vanguard’s 6-0 victory.

Sage loses to Whitney

* TENNIS: Sage Hill’s boys faced a familiar foe Tuesday, losing at

Whitney, 15-3. Tristan Cordier took two of the three sets in singles.

Three sets were decided by a tie-breaker, with the Wildcats winning

two. Sage Hill, No. 2 in Division V, fell to 8-7, and 5-2 in the

Academy League. Whitney, Division V’s No. 1 team, improved 15-2, 7-0.

Sage Hill’s only defeats in league came at the hands of Whitney.
