Estancia finishes undefeated

The Estancia High girls swim team closed out its Golden West League
dual-meet season with an undefeated record after a 110-60 victory
over visiting Orange Wednesday.
At this time last year, the Eagles were 3-3 in league, but they
are now 6-0 in the Golden West and 10-0 overall.
The Eagles won nine of the 11 events. Marilyn Reich and Sydney
Barloon won two events each. Reich completed a personal-record time
in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:15.32) and won the 200 individual
medley (2:30.70), while Barloon won the 50 freestyle (27.20) and 100
free (1:00.71).
Courtney Hess (2:22.20 in the 200 free) and Melissa Buchmann
(1:09.73, 100 backstroke) were also winners.

Eagle boys triumph
* SWIMMING: The Estancia High boys swim team defeated Orange,
104-65, Wednesday. Senior Anthony Hermann set a personal best in the
200-yard individual medley and 100 breaststroke and sophomore Chad
Kunert swam a CIF-qualifying time of 5:09.81 in the 500 freestyle to
improve the Eagles’ record to 8-2, 5-1 in the Golden West League.

Tars sweep Hawks
* SWIMMING: Newport Harbor High swept Laguna Hills in boys and
girls swimming Wednesday. The girls, who beat Laguna Hills, 115-55,
were paced by Leah Robinson, who took gold in the 50-yard freestyle,
100 free and was a member of the top-finishing 200 free relay.
Kayley Oka led a 1-2-3 finish for the Sailors in the girls 100
butterfly and Ashling Taylor led another sweep of the top-three
finishes in the girls 100 breaststroke. Also taking first for the
Sailors was Melissa Wheeler in the 200 free.
The Newport Harbor boys, who beat Laguna Hills, 103.5-63.5, relied
on James Jackson’s winning times in the 200 individual medley and 100
back, as well as his part in the 200 free relay. Clay Jorth finished
first in the 200 free and behind teammate Kyle Sherman in the 500
free.
Estancia sweeps Lions
* VOLLEYBALL: The jump serves were effective for Estancia High’s
boys volleyball team Wednesday, sweeping Westminster 25-9, 25-7,
25-13. Kris Hartwell led all hitters with 11 kills for the Eagles
(14-1, 8-0 in the Golden West League). Trevor Holmes finished with 24
assists for Estancia.
“Most of our points were because of our serves,” Estancia Coach
Tracy Ingraham said.
Estancia will travel to the Tournament of Champions hosted by
Santa Barbara High this weekend. The third-seeded Eagles will be
tested by stiff competition at the tournament which will include
Division III powerhouse Oxnard. The Yellowjackets are ranked No. 2 in
the division, behind top-ranked Estancia.
Peterson tames Saints
* BASEBALL: Senior Justin Peterson, who had a no-hitter through
six innings, went 2 for 4 with an RBI and scored two runs to key the
Costa Mesa High baseball team’s 5-3 Golden West League victory over
host Santa Ana Wednesday.
Peterson, who recorded seven strikeouts, allowed five hits and the
Saints also scored three runs in the seventh inning. Senior Gary
Gonzalez also contributed with a 3-for-4 performance that came with
two RBIs for the Mustangs (9-8, 4-2 in league). Jeff Waldron went 2
for 4. Santa Ana dropped to 11-8, 4-2.

Eagles top Los Amigos
* BASEBALL: Estancia High met the goals Coach Jon Green set out
before the Eagles’ 10-7 win over Los Amigos in a nonleague matchup.
Jeremy Hauser powered the Eagles offense, going 3 for 4 with one
RBI and three runs. Freshman Taylor McClanahan picked up his first
win of the season and helped his own cause by driving in two runs.
Estancia (3-13, 0-6 in the Golden West League) hosts Ocean View
Friday.

Harbor ends in middle
* GOLF: Newport Harbor finished in the middle of the pack, 11 out
of 22 teams, at the Orange Lutheran invitational at Black Gold Golf
Club in Yorba Linda with a 413. Orange Lutheran won the event with a
377. Davis Pemstein led the Sailors with a 79, and Brandon Sowers
finished with an 80. Newport Harbor plays at Oak Creek today against
Irvine in a Sea View League match.
Saints explode in sixth
* SOFTBALL: Host Santa Ana High used a six-hit, five-run sixth
inning to pull away from Costa Mesa, earning a 7-1 Golden West League
softball victory Wednesday that catapulted them atop the league
standings.
Mesa starter Jackie Butler took a one-hitter into the sixth, but
was victimized by four errors and suffered the loss. She struck out
five and walked none. Two of the Saints’ five runs in the inning were
unearned
Senior Jane-E Yamamoto pulled Mesa (9-13, 4-2 in league), which
fell a game behind Santa Ana, within one run with a solo home run in
the fourth inning and finished 2 for 2 with a double.
The Mustangs loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with one
out, but left all three runners.
Mesa loses in three
* VOLLEYBALL: Ryan Bagwell recorded eight aces, all on jump
serves, but the Costa Mesa High boys volleyball team lost, 25-16,
28-26, 25-21, to Golden West League host Ocean View Wednesday.
Bagwell also had five kills, while Mitch Mandel added four for the
Mustangs (6-8, 3-4 in league). Costa Mesa returns to action Friday,
playing at La Quinta in a nonleague match that starts at 3:30 p.m.
Foothill’s Hughes sharp
* BASEBALL: League-leading Foothill High may have beat Newport
Harbor, 2-0, but Sailors Coach Joel Desguin wasn’t upset about the
loss.
“It was a good battle. They had a tough pitcher that can throw in
the 90s, so I can’t complain about the way we played,” he said.
Senior Phil Hughes picked up his seventh win, scattering three
hits while pitching a complete game, and Chris Swisher hit a home run
in the sixth inning for the Knights.

Jones, Burnham win
* TRACK AND FIELD: Orange Coast College’s Tim Burnham cleared 11
feet, 11 inches to win the men’s pole vault at Tuesday’s Orange
Empire Conference men’s and women’s track and field championships at
UC Riverside.
All men’s and women’s field events, along with the two
10,000-meter races, were finals while running events were
preliminaries.
Sophomore Ava Jones claimed the women’s 10,000 (37:47.78) while
teammates Sandra Montoya (39:00.99) and Jessica Huerta placed second
and fourth, respectively.
Joanna Williams placed second in the high jump (4-9) while Tayler
Cusick took second in the long jump (16-2 1/4).
Kevin Curley placed second in the 10,000 (33:20.10) while Derek
Davis finished third in the hammer throw (128-3).
After six events, the OCC men hold a 72-42 lead over Riverside
while the Coast women take a 93.5-41 edge over Fullerton into
Friday’s finals.
Coast men to qualify for the finals include: Peter Bas and Son
Thai (400 meters); Humberto Rojas, Patrick Fitzgerald, Matt Staggs
and Irwin Salas (800); Andrew Cary (110 hurdles); Bas and Cary (400
hurdles).
Coast women to qualify include: Williams (100); Gegi Van De
Walker, Elda Hernandez and Williams (200); Van De Walker, Hanni
Geider, Hernandez and Jasmine Geider (400); Ava Jones, Annie Garton,
Ludi Valdez and Eileen Bello (800); Hanni and Jasmine Geider (400
hurdles).
