CORONA DEL MAR -- The legs of Kevin Artz and Brandon Borcoman carried

the Corona del Mar High boys track and field team to an 85-42 victory

over University, but that was by design.

Coach Bill Sumner sat Chris Ringstrom, the Sea Kings’ top 100- and

200-meter runner, to ensure the senior would be well rested for

Saturday’s Orange County championships at Trabuco Hills. But the plan

almost backfired.

“They really gave us a run,” Sumner said of University’s

performance. The Sea Kings did win, however, to improve to 6-2, and

remain undefeated in the Pacific Coast League at 4-0.

Artz won the 800 and 1,600, while Borcoman took first in 200 and

400. Also stepping up for CdM was Eemaan Jalili, who blasted by the

competition with a 16.1-second showing in the 110 high hurdles. The

big concern from Sumner was the depth of the boys squad.

“We’re really good across the top, but we don’t have a lot of guys

that will get us points for third and fourth place,” Sumner said.

Corona del Mar took nine first-place finishes, compared to

University’s six, but the Sea Kings placed second and third 17 times

to University’s nine.

“We’re really running well, but I expect us to improve as the

season matures,” Sumner said. “Today, we’re business as usual.”

One area that was a pleasant surprise for Sumner and the Sea Kings

was the strong showing in the throwing events. Corona del Mar is not

as proficient in the field as in the track events, but the Sea Kings

took second and third in the shot put and discus. UC Berkley-bound

Chris Smith threw 60 feet, 9 inches in the shot put and 168-7 in the

discus and beat his nearest competitor by nearly 18 and 41 feet,

respectively.
