OCC’s Natalazio earns Co-Swimmer of Year

Orange Coast College’s Sara Natalazio was named the Orange Empire

Conference women’s Co-Swimmer of the Year Saturday after winning the

100-yard butterfly and anchoring the winning 400 free relay team in

the OEC finals at Saddleback College.

Shannon Maxfield was second in the 50 free and Erin Harvey placed

third in the 100 free to help lead OCC to a second-place finish

overall with 513 points.

On the men’s side, Jason Huang took gold in the 200-yard back and

was part of the second-placing finishing 400 free relay team. The OCC

men earned 488 points for a third-place finish.

Newport takes bronze

* VOLLEYBALL: Newport Harbor High senior Morgan Govaars had a

team-high 17 kills and eight digs while junior Brett Perrine added 15

kills to pace the Sailors to a 22-25, 25-17, 25-21, 18-25, 15-11

victory over Clovis West for third place in the Santa Barbara

Tournament of Champions at Santa Barbara High Saturday.

Govaars, who earned all-tournament honors, tallied five kills in

the fifth game.

Gavin Galey finished with 13 kills while Jon Langford added 12

kills and five blocks for Newport (16-7), the No. 2 seed.

Buchanan of Fresno defeated Newport, 23-25, 25-23, 8-25, 17-25, in

the semifinals.

Perrine led the Sailors with 14 kills while Govaars and Ted Slater

added 12 and six kills, respectively.

CdM, Estancia clash

* VOLLEYBALL: Corona del Mar High finished seventh in the Santa

Barbara Tournament of Champions. The Sea Kings (15-9) swept Estancia,

25-19, 25-15, 25-23, in the seventh-place match Saturday.

Earlier in the day, CdM lost to Santa Ynez, a school it has faced

three times in CIF Southern Section title matches, in four games.

Estancia’s Kris Hartwell, who led all players with 54 kills

throughout the tournament, tallied 10 of those against CdM. Brad

Larsen and Scott Sankey finished with 10 and seven kills,

respectively.

The Eagles (16-4) lost to Santa Barbara, 25-21, 17-25, 25-22, 25-21, in a fifth-place semifinal match earlier Saturday. Hartwell

finished with 15 kills while Trevor Holmes tallied 36 assists. Senior

outside hitter Josh Kornegay finished with seven kills.

Sailors grab third place

* SWIMMING: Newport Harbor High finished third out of 25 teams at

the Palm Springs invitational Saturday. Ashling Taylor posted the

best times for the Sailors in the 200-yard IM and the 100

breaststroke. Leah Robertson was fastest for Newport in the 50 and

100 free, while Melissa Wheeler bested her teammates in 200 and 500

free. Jennifer Beech was the quickest Sailor in the 100 backstroke.

Lions split doubleheader

* BASEBALL: Vanguard University split a doubleheader at home

against Westmont College Saturday despite two admirable outings by

Lion pitchers in Golden State Athletic Conference play.

Jason Searle allowed one run and seven hits over eight innings and

also went 2 for 4 at the plate to help Vanguard win, 3-1, in the

opener.

Marcus Harris struck out six through 10 innings and Adam Yoder hit

an RBI double in the seventh for Vanguard to score Mike Sparks to tie

the second game, but Westmont won, 2-1. VU is 11-30, 4-19 in the

GSAC.

Cougars sweep ‘Eaters

* VOLLEYBALL: Top-seeded Brigham Young University ended

eighth-seeded UC Irvine’s season with a 30-24, 30-23, 30-21 Mountain

Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball quarterfinal victory

Saturday night in Provo, Utah.

Senior middle blocker Kyle Weichert, the Sports/Imports AVCA

Division I-II men’s national Player of the Year, led the Anteaters

(14-18, 8-14) with 11 kills while David Smith tallied eight. Brett

Reid finished with 39 assists for UCI. BYU improved to 25-4, 20-2.

Newport Regatta today

* ROWING: Orange Coast College will be one of 10 schools competing

in today’s Newport Regatta, which features nine races, beginning with

the novice four at 7:30 a.m. along the North Lido Channel.

OCC, the only community college crew in the country, will compete

against teams from UCLA, UC Irvine, UCSB, Loyola Marymount,

University of San Diego, UC San Diego, San Diego State and Long Beach

State on the 2,000-meter course.

CdM girls claim third

* SWIMMING: The Corona del Mar High girls frosh/soph team finished

third at the Estancia invitational with 221.5 points Saturday. Tesoro

won the event at 340.5 and Los Alamitos won the boys meet at 304.0.

Kathryn Indvik in the 100-yard IM, Ashley Chandler in the 100

freestyle and Alexine Rodenhuis in the 50 backstroke all took first

for the Sea Kings. Chandler also came in second in the 200 free.

Estancia’s Chad Kunert finished second in the 500 free with a time

of 5:06.45 and third in the 200 free at 1:54.80.

Singles ignites Lightning

* TENNIS: The Sage Hill School boys tennis team, ranked No. 2 in

CIF Southern Section Division V, dropped just two games in singles

and easily defeated Academy League host Brethren Christian, 15-3,

Thursday.

Sage Hill Coach A.G. Longoria said his team’s singles play was its

best of the season, as Tristan Cordier and Robert Wee swept without

losing a game, and Julian Tooma won, 6-0, 6-2, 6-0. The No. 1 doubles

team of Ian Livingston and Dan Chin also swept for the Lightning

(9-7, 6-2 in league), which is in second place in the Academy League.

Brethren Christian dropped to 6-8, 3-5.
