Double no-no for CdM

Corona del Mar High freshmen Michelle Tolfa and Holly Van Hiel each

threw a no-hitter as the Sea Kings won the first two games of pool

play in the Garden Grove softball tournament at Mark Twain School

Saturday.

Van Hiel notched her second no-hitter in three days in CdM’s 1-0

win over St. Matthias in the second game.

She struck out nine while walking three and hit a batter. Van Hiel

struck out six with no walks in CdM’s 7-0 Pacific Coast League

victory over Laguna Beach Thursday.

Tolfa fanned 13, striking out the side in the first, second and

fourth innings, while walking two in the Sea Kings’ 16-0, five-inning

victory over Connelly in the first game.

One Connelly runner reached second base.

CdM (9-6, 1-3 in league) scored its only run against St. Matthias

in the top of the seventh.

Allie Duernberger singled home Heather Lohrman, who led off the

inning with a bunt single and was sacrificed to second.

In the first game, Tolfa went 4 for 4 with five RBIs and three

runs scored while Van Hiel was 3 for 3 with an RBI and scored three

times.

Vanguard sweeps APU

* Vanguard University rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat

visiting Azusa Pacific, 7-3, in the first game, then rode Jennifer

Rynda’s five-hit shutout to a 2-0 victory to sweep a Golden State

Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday.

Rynda struck out five and did not walk a batter to improve to

10-7, upping Vanguard’s record to 31-24, 13-11 in conference.

First baseman Catherine Buttrey was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Ashley

Mauro drove in another run in the second game.

In the opener, Heather Durham went 3 for 3 with an RBI to lead

four Lions with at least two hits. VU scored three in the fourth and

four in the sixth to overcome APU (26-20-1, 9-15).
