‘Cook’-ing up a Giant upset, 8-7

Scott Cook’s hit cleared the bases and Sandon Griffin scored the

winning run to give the Giants an 8-7 victory over the Padres in a

Newport Beach Little League Majors Division game Tuesday.

The Giants rallied from a five-run deficit on the hitting of Kyle

Jensen, Patrick Vorwerck and Nathan Wagner. Wagner pitched the last

two innings for the victory after Griffin started.

The Padres took a three-run lead on a long home run by Carmen

Koziara in the first inning.

Cort Hastings’ strong defense helped the Giants.

Brent Lawson had two hits and Bryce Ashton pitched well for the

Padres, who also received strong play from catcher Bruce Bearer.

In other Newport Beach Majors action:

* Dodgers 5, Yankees 1:

Nick Couchot and Doug Watt combined on a two-hitter and allowed

one walk in leading the Dodgers on April 17.

The Dodger defense did not commit an error.

Ben Capaldi and Donald Dalton led the offense by getting timely

hits and scoring two runs each.

John Christian hit a solo home run in the second inning to lead

the Yankees while Sam Cubeiro tossed a five-hitter.

* Giants 13, Red Sox 3:

The Giants unleashed a 12-hit attack against the Red Sox April 15.

Jensen, Vorwerck, Wagner and Griffin each had two hits, while

Hastings, Brandon Pick, Daniel Noto and Edward Burgner each added a

hit.

Pick led the Giants with three RBIs while Cook played strong

defense. Griffin fanned eight in three innings.

J.B. Salem, Wes Nielsen and Brooks Brady all had hits for the Red

Sox.

* Braves 11, Angels 5:

The Braves scored 10 runs in the top of the sixth to forge the

victory.

Jack Gerdau began the rally with a bunt single and Parker Stone,

Josh Harrison, Nick Manning and Jed Thayer each followed with hits.

Dillon Campbell had an RBI triple in the third and Danny

Borg-Sundstrom tripled in the fifth.

Thayer, Stone and Gerdau led the Braves (6-4), who are tied for

first place in the National League, on the mound while Justin Tucker

and Dylan Varner anchored the defense.

Nick Flamson and Jamie Heinecke limited the Braves to one run on

three hits through the first five innings.

* Braves 5, Cardinals 0:

Stone struck out four in tossing a three-hit shutout for the

Braves.

The Cardinals’ Michael Bloom was equally impressive, striking out

nine in four innings.

Campbell, Gerdau, Thayer and Austin Blodgett all had hits during a

four-run third.

Anthony Mainero, Josh Harrison and Bret Klein helped the Braves

play errorless defense.

Cory Vitalo, Andrew Dunlap and Jake Starnes tallied hits for the

Cardinals.

* Braves 9, Cubs 0:

The pitching of Thayer, Stone and Gerdau led the Braves to their

second straight shutout of the Cubs.

The trio yielded two hits and a walk, facing just three batters

more than the minimum.

Gerdau struck out four of the six batters he faced in the final

two innings.

Gerdau (triple, two runs scored), Blodgett (triple, double),

Campbell and Borg-Sundstrom each had two hits as part of the Braves’

11-hit attack.

Varner and Thayer also added timely hits.

Mainero, Klein and Manning helped in the errorless effort.

* Reds 2, Mariners 1:

The Reds played flawless defense to remain undefeated this season.

Sean Tokuyama and Michael Borchard struck out eight in five innings

for the Reds.

John Doering pitched impressively in the Mariners defeat, striking

out eight and walking just two.

Mattias Russo-Larsson’s two-out single scored Borchard with the

winning run in the fourth.

Chris Alvarez’s third-inning hit scored David Moore for the game’s

first run.

The Mariners rallied in the bottom of the fifth, when J.D. Abbott

doubled to right-center field and Chris Freeman followed with a

single. Abbott eventually stole home.

* Reds 10, Padres 5:

The Reds trailed, 5-4, heading into the fourth inning, but rallied

to improve to 10-0 this season.

Allen Brown scored three runs to lead the Reds’ offense, which

also got contributions from Tokuyama, Jack Schloemer, Nick Tripi,

Will Morrow, Brennan Anderson and Joey Booth.

The Reds’ fourth-inning rally began when Brown reached on a single

and scored on Tokuyama’s single.

Alvarez pitched three shutout innings, striking out five to earn

the victory. Derek Spreitzer, Koziara and Brent Lawson led the

Padres’ offense.
