UC Irvine senior middle blocker Kyle Weichert has been chosen the

Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men’s National Player of the Week.

Weichert recorded 10 kills with zero errors on 14 attempts for a

.714 hitting effort in a win over UC Santa Barbara, the 12th-best

mark in Anteater history. He added four digs, three assists and one

ace against the Gauchos.

Weichert followed that outing with 11 kills and five blocks

against Cal State Northridge. With four block assists against the

Matadors, Weichert became the UCI career leader with 373. He has also

set the single-season record for block assists this year with 152,

before Saturday’s Mountain Pacific Sports Federation quarterfinal

loss at BYU.

Weichert averaged 3.25 points, 2.62 kills and 0.88 blocks, while

hitting at a .576 clip (21 kills with two errors in 33 attempts) for

the week in which he was honored.

It is Weichert’s first Player of the Week recognition and he

becomes the fourth UCI men’s player to garner the national honor.

Eagles clinch share of title

* TENNIS: The Estancia High boys tennis team clinched at least a

share of the Golden West League championship Monday by defeating

Saddleback, 10-8, on the Roadrunners courts.

It’s believed to be the first league championship for the Eagles

boys program in at least 10 years.

“This was a huge win for us, but we’re not getting too excited

until we win the whole thing,” Estancia Coach Rachel de los Santos

said.

Monday, sophomore Scott Braunsdorf swept at No. 1 singles to lead

the way and improve to 32-1 in league singles sets this spring.

The No. 2 doubles team of Bryce McKendry and Nick Cox, as well as

the No. 3 duo of David Do and Andy Nelson, won two sets apiece to

help Estancia avenge a 10-8 loss to the Roadrunners in their first

league meeting.

Estancia (10-5, 9-2 in league) can clinch the outright league

crown by defeating Orange in the Eagles’ league finale today.

Sailors edge Vaqueros

* TENNIS: The Newport Harbor High boys tennis team used a

makeshift lineup to defeat Irvine, 10-8, Monday in a Sea View League

who missed the match to attend to family matters.

In addition, Jake Fleming was shifted from singles to doubles

after sustaining a scratched cornea.

Fleming and partner Ruslan Serydyk, swept at No. 1 doubles to help

the Sailors improve to 12-5, 7-1 in league.

Newport plays host to Laguna Hills today, before visiting

Woodbridge Thursday. With wins over Laguna Hills and Woodbridge, the

Sailors would finish the league season in no worse than a first-place
