Eagles win Scott Cup

Estancia High’s boys golf team wrapped up its second straight

undefeated Golden West League season with a 188-213 victory over

rival Costa Mesa to claim the first Scott Cup Tuesday on the par-35

Mesa Linda course at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club.

Greg Les equaled his season-best with an even-par 35 while Jason

Les and Marcus Sostak each followed with 36 for the Eagles (13-5, 8-0

in league). Austin Serr carded a 38 while John Rausch fired a 43 for

the winners, who ate a celebratory dinner at the Newport Rib Company.

Billy Jackson fired a 37 while Robert Angel (42), Brett Via (43),

Brian Beach (44) and Al Rodriguez (47) scored for Mesa.

“Estancia: 2004” will be engraved on the Scott Cup, a perpetual

trophy to be displayed at the Newport Rib Company.

Both Mesa and Estancia will compete in league finals, held Monday

and Tuesday at Mesa Linda.

Estancia captures title

* TENNIS: The Estancia High boys tennis team clinched the Golden

West League title outright with a 14-4 victory over visiting Orange

Tuesday.

Sophomore Scott Braunsdorf swept at No. 1 singles for the Eagles

(11-6, 10-2 in league) while Benny Edles and Nick Aguirre each took

two sets.

Estancia’s Bryce McKendry and Nick Cox improved to 29-7 in doubles

this season with a sweep, which included defeating an Orange doubles

duo that had only one prior league loss.

Chase Raymond and Garrett Stephenson, along with the tam of Andy

Nelson and David Do, each claimed two sets for the Eagles, who will

compete in the league finals beginning at 1 p.m. Monday at Ocean

View.

UCI pummels Trojans

* BASEBALL: The UC Irvine baseball team routed host USC, 13-2,

Tuesday night in nonconference action.

The Anteaters had 16 hits and scored four runs in the first inning

to trigger the onslaught. David Huff earned the win for UCI

(27-11-1).

Ball wins in Fresno

* TENNIS: Corona del Mar High junior Carsten Ball won the boys 18

singles title in the United States Tennis Association Interscholastic

championships in Fresno Monday.

Ball, the top seed, defeated Lee Singer, 6-3, 2-6, 6-0. Singer was

the draw’s fifth seed. CdM junior Wesley Miller also competed in the

USTA event. He reached the quarterfinals, where he lost to Singer,

2-6, 2-6.

Ball is ranked 53rd in the USTA national boys 18 rankings that were released Tuesday. Newport Beach resident Kaes Van’t Hof is

No.43.

Ball and Miller will also be in the Gator Bowl in Ponte Vedra,

Fla. Saturday through Monday.

Sea Kings on top again

* TENNIS: Even without one of its top singles players, the Corona

del Mar High boys tennis team shut out visiting Laguna Beach, 18-0,

in a Pacific Coast League match Tuesday.

Corona del Mar junior Carsten Ball swept his sets without dropping

a game. Dan Tat and Nick Gingold also won three singles sets each for

the Sea Kings (18-0, 6-0) ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section

Division I.

Wesley Miller, who is usually the No. 2 singles player, rested a

sore back, CdM Coach Tim Mang said. Spencer Reitz and Jonathan

Kroopf, as well as the tandems of Ryan Caughren-Brennan Roberts and

Alex Nguyen-Sean Pham won three sets each in doubles.

Tars win third in row

* GOLF: Mike Benvenuti shot a 1-over-par 37 to lead the Newport

Harbor High boys golf team to a 202-214 Sea View League victory over

visiting Laguna Hills Tuesday at Big Canyon Country Club.

Davis Pemstein and David Motschenbacher each shot 38 while Brandon

Sowers (43) and Rhett Palmer (46) scored for the Sailors, 10-8, 4-5

in league), winners of three in a row.

Newport wraps up league play against Woodbridge at 3 p.m. Thursday

at Rancho San Joaquin Golf Course in Irvine before battling Back Bay

rival Corona del Mar in the Pelican Cup at 1:30 p.m. Friday at

Pelican Hill Golf Club.

Govaars leads Newport

* VOLLEYBALL: Newport Harbor High’s boys volleyball team remained

undefeated in the Sea View League with a 25-18, 25-18, 28-30, 25-20 road victory against Foothill Tuesday.

Senior Morgan Govaars finished with 17 kills while Gavin Galey

(13) and Brett Perrine (11) each added kills for the Sailors (18-7,

7-0 in league), who moved up one spot to fifth in the latest CIF

Southern Section Division I rankings released this week.

Ted Slater and Jon Langford each tallied seven kills while senior

setter Adam Schlesinger recorded four blocks and 52 assists.

Poncino takes second

* GOLF: UC Irvine senior Vinnie Poncino finished as runner-up in

the Big West Conference men’s golf championships, as Long Beach

State’s Todd Saukkola won medalist honors in a two-hole playoff at

Tijeras Creek Golf Club Tuesday.

Both finished with 54-hole totals of 7-under 209. Saukkola shot a

4-under 68 in the final round and Poncino a 2-under 70. In the

playoff on the par-4 18th hole, both golfers recorded pars the first

time around. On the second playoff hole, also at 18, Saukkola won the

individual title with a par.

Sailors defeat Hawks

* TENNIS: Freshman Jake Fleming didn’t lose a game in sweeping at

No. 1 singles as Newport Harbor High’s boys tennis team claimed all

nine singles sets in disposing of visiting Laguna Hills, 14-4, in a

Sea View League match Tuesday.

Charlie Farmer and Tyler Deck each lost just two games in the

other singles spots while the doubles team of Dylan Espley-Jones and

John Cefalia swept in doubles for Newport (13-5, 8-1 in league).

The Sailors will try to earn a share of the league crown when they

face host Woodbridge, ranked fourth in CIF Southern Section Division

I, at 3:15 p.m. Thursday.

Sage tames Wildcats

* VOLLEYBALL: Sage Hill School defeated Whitney in four games

Tuesday in an Academy League match, 25-19, 25-17, 19-25, 25-12.

Kevin Joyce led the Lightning with 17 kills and Max Fredrick added

10 kills to bring Sage Hill to 13-1 and 7-1 in the Academy League.

Senior setter Julian Smith-Newman had 34 assists despite coming off a

torn meniscus in his right knee.

The Lightning have a chance to tie for the league lead when they

play Brethren Christian Friday at 5 p.m.

VU upsets Sea Lions

* BASEBALL: The Vanguard University baseball team shocked visiting

Point Loma Nazarene, ranked No. 4 in the NAIA, with a 14-1 defeat

that included 18 hits in a Golden State Athletic Conference game

Tuesday.

Point Loma (35-10, 18-6 in conference), the Sea Lions, entered the

game first place in the GSAC, but the Lions (12-31, 5-20), seventh in

the eight-team conference, turned them away with power and great

pitching from Michael Guernsey, who struck out three, walked three

and scattered five hits in his seven innings of work.

Isaac Salazar led the Lions with a 3-for-3 performance that came

with two runs and an RBI, while David Hudgins and Adam Yoder

contributed three RBIs each. Hudgins, Nikolaus Crouch, Mike Sparks,

Jason Brunett and Travis Westerfeld added two hits each.

Sage stops opponent

* TENNIS: Sage Hill Schools boys tennis team dropped just one

singles and doubles match in defeating visiting St. Margaret’s, 16-2,

in Academy League play Tuesday.

Ara Dimirjian lost just four games in sweeping at No. 2 singles

while Ian Livingston and Dan Chin lost two games to their three

opponents for Sage (10-7, 7-2 in league), ranked No. 2 in CIF

Southern Section Division V. St. Margaret’s fell to 5-9, 4-5.

The Lightning host Fairmont Prep in their final league match

Thursday before league finals, scheduled Tuesday and Wednesday at the

Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club.

Gleason shines in loss

* SOFTBALL: Newport Harbor High junior Ashley Gleason struck out

seven, walked two and did not allow an earned run, but the Sailors

softball team lost to Sea View League host Laguna Hills, 4-0,

Tuesday.

The Sailors (7-10, 1-4 in league) committed five errors, as Laguna

Hills (19-6, 3-2) took advantage. Gleason, who scattered five hits in

the circle, was one of four hitters for Newport Harbor. Julianne

Bass, Kayleigh Horn and Katie Daniels also produced a hit.

Sea Kings stunned

* SOFTBALL: The Corona del Mar High softball team, which had

produced three no-hitters in a row, were edged, 2-1, by Pacific Coast

League host Calvary Chapel Tuesday.

Freshman pitcher Michelle Tolfa recorded eight strikeouts, walked

two and scattered four hits for the Sea Kings (9-7, 1-4 in league).

Calvary improved to 5-15, 2-3. CdM Coach Nichole Thompson said her

players lacked intensity and weren’t disciplined at the plate.

“I just don’t think we were mentally there because Michelle

pitched well enough to win,” Thompson said. “We also didn’t take

advantage of their [four errors] ... We are a better team than that.”

Mesa falls in four

* VOLLEYBALL: Costa Mesa High lost in four games to Golden West

League foe Saddleback, 20-25, 17-25, 26-24, 15-25.

Costa Mesa was led by sophomore outside hitter Ryan Bagwell and

sophomore setter Andrew Melcer. Bagwell collected 19 kills and Melcer

handed out 31 assists on the night.

The Mustangs, 7-9 and 3-5 in the GWL, are in fifth place in the

GWL and play fourth-place Orange today. Costa Mesa needs to win three

of its last four matches in order to qualify for the playoffs.

Errors hurt Sage Hill

* SOFTBALL: Sage Hill lost to Capistrano Valley Christian, 2-1, in

Academy League softball action Tuesday.

Sophomore Rebecca Hembarsky struck out three batters and did not

allow an earned run despite picking up the loss. The Lightning

committed four errors in the bottom of the second inning that led

directly to both of the Eagles’ runs.

Lauren Neale, who went 2-3, hit a two-out RBI single that scored

Hambrasky in the first. Sage Hill, 6-9-1 and 2-3 in the Academy

League, plays league-leading Oxford Academy Friday.

Tigers roar past Pirates

* BASEBALL: Ben Nieto struck out 12 with only three walks in 7 2/3

innings and the visiting Riverside College baseball team gave him

plenty of run support in a 15-3 Orange Empire Conference victory over

Orange Coast Tuesday.

The Pirates (11-19, 5-13 in the OEC) cut the deficit to 4-3 with a

two-run third, but Riverside (19-12, 9-9) scored four runs each in

the sixth and seventh innings to pull away.

Jeff Piaskowski went 3 for 4 with three RBIs while Anthony Duarte

and Matt Cline each had two hits and scored a run for the Pirates,

who committed seven errors. Brandon Lutgendorf struck out five in 5

2/3 innings and allowed eight runs, only four earned.

UCI ekes past ASU

* WATER POLO: The No. 19 UC Irvine women’s water polo team edged

No. 15 Arizona State, 7-6, to clinch 10th in the Mountain Pacific

Sports Federation at the Anteater Aquatics Complex Sunday.

Erica Horman led the Anteaters (9-19, 3-8 in the MPSF) with three

goals, two of which came in the first quarter. Melissa Fernandez

added two goals, the former gave UCI a 3-0 lead.

Lions close out season

* TRACK AND FIELD: Vanguard University’s Matt Meyer, Tony Magana

and Sarah Hall finished second place in their respective events in

the Golden State Track and Field championships, which concluded

Saturday in Fresno.

In addition, Hall and Christol McDonald qualified for the NAIA

National championships, May 27-29 in Louisville, Ky. Hall will

compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, which she finished second

(11:25.40) Saturday, while McDonald took third in the women’s 800

(2:14.46).

The Vanguard men’s team finished sixth, while the women were in

seventh out of the seven teams in the finals. Azusa Pacific won the

men’s and women’s titles.

Overall, for the Lions, there were eight athletes who earned

All-GSAC honors with top-3 finishes.

Magana finished second in the men’s 3,000 steeplechase (9:57.50)

and third in the 5,000 (15:50.17). Meyer was edged in the 1,500

finishing behind APU’s Brandon Shaw by an .85 second margin. Meyer

finished in a season-best 3:58.89. Meyer also anchored the men’s

4x800 relay team to a third-place finish Friday night.

The other All-GSAC relay members included Alex Castro, Billy Smith

and Zach Powell, a Costa Mesa High product. Freshman Levi Seekins

added a third-place finish in the high jump, 6 feet, 2 inches, a

personal best.
