Jacqueline Chattopadhyay, an undergraduate student at UC Irvine,

has been named a recipient of the Harry S. Truman Scholarship. The

award is given to college juniors who have demonstrated exceptional

leadership potential and who are committed to careers in public

service. Chattopadhyay is the third student from UCI in the last five

years to receive the national scholarship and one of just 77 students

nationwide to be named a Truman scholar. As a scholar she will

receive $2,000 for her senior year and $24,000 for graduate study ...

Sarah Rose Roberts of Costa Mesa was named to the dean’s academic

honor list at Baylor University in Waco, Texas for the 2003 fall

semester. To be named to the dean’s list an undergraduate student

must have a 3.7 GPA while enrolled in 12 semester hours ... Michael

T. Clegg, considered one of the most distinguished plant

evolutionists in the world, will join the UC Irvine faculty as the

Donald Bren professor of biological sciences. Clegg is a member of

the National Academy of Sciences and a fellow of the American Academy

of Arts and Sciences. Marine Corps Pvt. Brian Moreno, son of Hilda A.

and Ignacio Moreno of Costa Mesa, recently completed 12 weeks of

basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego. The

training is designed to challenge recruits both physically and

mentally. Moreno learned first aid, uniform regulations, combat water

survival, marksmanship, hand-to-hand combat and assorted weapons

Jenifer L. Rogers , Sandra P. Romero, Patrick J. Rosa, Regina J. Ryu,

Nicole E. Salcido, Akimitsu Sasaki, Yosuke Sato, Brian Schuff, Ayako

Sekimura, Jennifer C. Shively and Hiroko Shoji, all of Costa Mesa,

were named to Orange Coast College’s dean’s list for the fall

semester of 2003.
