Cubs hold off Marlins

The Cubs jumped out to an early four-run lead, then held off the

Marlins’ late rally to post a 4-3 victory in Ocean View Little League

Majors Division play at Murdy Park.

The Cubs scored three first-inning runs, with Jason Fernandez’s

single sparking the rally. Sean Guite then tripled to right-center to

score Fernandez. Two walks and two hit batters led to another run and

a 3-0 lead.

In the second inning, Fernandez walked, Guite doubled and Calvin

Primich and Chad Hackworth each singled as the Cubs scored again to

make it 4-0.

Jordan Miller pitched the first four innings for the Cubs and

Guite pitched the last two innings, striking out all six batters.

The Marlins got two hits from Brandon Holland.

In other games:

Cubs 5, A’s 4

The Cubs rallied from a 4-1 deficit to defeat the first-place A’s.

The A’s had scored three unearned runs in the top of the third to

take a 4-1 lead. But the Cubs rallied behind Jordan Miller’s RBI

single and Calvin Primich’s RBI triple.

Primich scored the tying run on an overthrow, and in the fifth the

Cubs scored the winning run on an RBI single by Miller.

Jonathan Combest doubled for the A’s.

In Minor A Division action:

Giants 13, Reds 5

The Giants surged to the lead over the Reds for good with a

seven-run fifth inning.

The Giants’ Brandon Stadler hit his second home run of the season,

a three-run shot over the left center field fence and the Giants

rallied to score seven runs in the inning.

The Giants offense collected 14 hits. Stadler went three for

three, which also included a double, Grant Mayeaux went three for

three and Austin Barlow had two hits.

Jake Rubino started the game for the Giants and limited the Reds

to one run on three hits and a walk. He struck out six in four

innings.

Mayeaux closed out the final two innings, striking out five.

Giants 15, Angels 11

The Giants came up with 10 runs in the fifth inning, then held off

the Angels, who scored seven times in the sixth.

Clinging to a 5-4 lead in the fifth, the Giants strung together

nine consecutive hits to score 10 runs and take a 15-4 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Angels had scored three runs

before Zachary Gates delivered a grand slam to make it 15-11.

The Giants offense hammered out 16 hits. Casey Hayes doubled twice

in going three for three and Grant Mayeaux, Jake Rubino, Austin

Barlow and Brandon Stadler each had a pair of hits.

Marlins 7, Dodgers 6

The rain-delayed victory, their fifth straight, gave the Marlins

sole possession of first place in the division.

Jack Rulon doubled and scored on a Connor Diegelman hit in the

second inning to tie the game for the Marlins at 1-1.

After the Dodgers had raced to a 6-1 lead, the Marlins rallied

behind a two-RBI double by Devin King, and Diegelman scored on a wild

pitch, bringing the score to 6-4. In the bottom of the sixth, they

got the win as Lewis connected on an RBI double and singled in two

runs for a 7-6 lead.

King went two for two and Jacob Caron went two for two with a run

scored and one RBI, and Lewis went two for two with two runs scored

and an RBI.

Marlins 11, Yankees 2

Devin King hit a two-run home run to highlight a big offensive

game by the Marlins.

Doubles by Tyler Mildenberg and Jack Rulon, and singles by Connor

Diegelman and Elijah Brown, which followed King’s homer, gave the

Marlins a 5-0 lead after one inning.

Jacob Caron had an RBI double and Mildenberg had a two-RBI double.

Mildenberg retired six of the first seven batters he faced and

allowed only two hits in three innings.

King, in his three innings on the mound, struck out seven of 10

batters.

Tim Larson tripled and scored a run for the Yankees.

Marlins 8, A’s 2

Jacob Caron went three for three with three runs scored and an RBI

for the Marlins.

Michelle Roe had two hits, including a double, and drove in three

runs, Connor Diegelman singled twice and scored twice and Devin King

had an RBI for the Marlins.

In Minor B action:

A’s 11, Cubs 5

Jason Baxter and Conner Cassotta each had two hits and Josh Said

scored twice and played a solid game at shortstop for the A’s.

James Shramek and William Morehand each had a key double for the

Cubs.

A’s 17, Tigers 5

Jake Poss started his first game of the season and pitched three

strong innings for the A’s.

Conner Cassotta relieved Poss at the start of the fourth inning

and closed the game, and neither pitcher walked a batter.

Anthony Rocha scored three runs and Alex Harden scored twice for

the A’s. William Morehand, Leland Morehand, David Feirstein and Josh

Said provided key hits.

A’s 30, Rockies 2

Tyler Hammock singled three times and scored three runs, Alex

Harden had a hit and RBI, Josh Said and James Shramek each scored

four runs, Anthony Rocha scored three runs and walked three times,

Jake Poss scored three runs and Patrick Poss scored three runs and

singled for the A’s.

At Seaview Little League:

Minor A Division

Royals 9, Cubs 2

Perry Clitheroe threw six outstanding innings and recorded a

74-pitch, no-walk gem for the second time in his last three games,

leading the Royals over the Cubs.

Clitheroe made or aided in 13 of the 18 outs.

The Royals Steven Malone had an RBI double and RBI singles were

added by Connor Ahern and Ryan Bleile.

Cubs starting pitcher Chase Leamer struck out eight in three

innings and Quentin Moscaritolo provided an RBI single.

Marlins 19, Dodgers 7

J.D. Keef had two hits and drove in three runs on his birthday to

help pace the Marlins.

Brendon Hartjoy had three hits, Andy Grunbaum had two hits and

turned a double play and Michael Buntich recorded the pitching win.

Danny Oates and Alex Rivas each had RBI singles for the Dodgers.

Angels 7, A’s 4

Mitch Clark, starting pitcher for the Angels, also had three hits

and two RBIs in the victory.

Jacob Lesinski provided an RBI single, Corey Schreiber had two

hits and Luke Herrington hit a ground-rule double for the Halos.

Angels 11, Cubs 3

Dominic Granado doubled twice, singled and drove in two runs to

power the Angels past the Cubs.

Christian Anderson had three hits, including a double and an RBI,

and Max Mayer struck out six to notch the win.

The Cubs Nick Plunkett had a double and two RBI and Jacob Likich

turned a double play.

Royals 23, Dodgers 2

Starter Connor Ahern struck out five for the win and the Royals

blasted out 17 hits in the win.

Ahern had three of those hits, including a triple with two RBI.

Perry Clitheroe singled twice and doubled with two RBIs, Nolan Heyer

doubled twice and singled, Ryan Bleile had two hits and four RBIs,

William Menke had two hits and three RBIs and Colby Griffith hit an

RBI double.

The Dodgers Dan Knight and Mitchell Grant each had two hits.

Marlins 14, A’s 4

Starter Michael Buntich struck out eight and recorded the win for

the Marlins.

Corey Hammond doubled twice with an RBI and Brendon Hartjoy

doubled and singled with two RBIs.

For the A’s, Kyle Curtis tripled and singled with two RBIs and

Grant Murchison turned a double play.
