Hoag part of weekend safety fair at the beach

Hoag Hospital is teaming up with regional medical and safety

organizations to showcase a safety fair in Huntington Beach on

Saturday.

The free safety education event features live demonstrations,

hands-on activities and a wealth of safety information for parents

and kids, officials said.

Community members are invited to kick off the summer season at the

Splash into Summer Safety Expo, which was organized by the Orange

County SAFE KIDS Campaign, Children’s Hospital of Orange County and

the California State Parks.

The free event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at

Huntington State Beach (at Newland and Pacific Coast Highway).

Rape awareness seminars scheduled

Costa Mesa Police will hold two rape awareness seminars in

response to an increasing number of sexual assaults taking place on

the Westside.

The first one is scheduled for 7 p.m. May 4 at the Westside

Substation, 567 W. 18th St. A second one will be held at 7 p.m. May

13 in the Costa Mesa Police Department’s auditorium. The department

is at 99 Fair Drive. Spanish translators will be available at the

hour-long sessions, officials said.

The seminars will offer various safety tips and information on

where victims can receive counseling. For more information about the

Jewelry artist to be celebrated at Tiffany’s

Tiffany & Co. will celebrate a great artist who changed the face

of the jewelry industry in “Pure Peretti,” which will showcase a

crafted collection of jewelry and objects created by Elsa Peretti.

Peretti’s contribution to design is evident in the fluid and

seamless shapes that define her exclusive jewelry and home

collections. In its entirety, the collection fully realizes the

signature of her style, officials said.

The designer is acclaimed for her interpretations of natural

forms, including bones, hearts, snakes, teardrops and starfish.

The collection of one of the world’s foremost designers will be on

view from Saturday to May 23 at Tiffany & Co. in South Coast Plaza.

Art professor to discuss new book at the library

Cal State Long Beach art professor and author Betty Edwards will

speak about her new book, “Color: A Course in Mastering the Art of

Mixing Colors,” on May 15 at the Newport Beach Central Library.

Edwards will talk about how to use color and how to mix and combine

colors for use in art, painting and design. Her visit is part of the

Newport Beach City Arts Commission’s 2004 Arts Lectures, Workshops

and Performances series.

Chamber to honor volunteers at meeting

The Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce will discuss future goals

and the past year’s accomplishments at its annual meeting and

volunteer recognition breakfast Thursday at the Newport Beach

Radisson Hotel. Also at the event, Newport Beach Mayor Tod Ridgeway

will give a special state of the city address, and close to 50

volunteers will be recognized for their work in support of the

chamber.

The breakfast event will be held at 7:15 a.m. Thursday at the

Radisson Hotel, 4545 MacArthur Blvd., Newport Beach. Tickets are $25

Architect chosen for amphitheater upgrade

The Orange County Fair and Exposition Center named Los Angeles

firm John Sergio Fisher & Associates as the design architect for the

Pacific Amphitheater renovation, which is scheduled to begin in

August after the 2004 fair.

The amphitheater will get upgrades to its stage, dressing rooms,

production office, seating areas and other areas. The work should

take nine months. The firm specializes in theater and entertainment

facility design.

Orchid society to show hundreds of species

The Newport Harbor Orchid Society will hold the 7th annual orchid

show and sale Saturday and Sunday in Costa Mesa.

“Oceans of Orchids” is the theme of this year’s show, which

features hundreds of orchid species as well as hybrids. Classes on

growing orchids and a hands-on potting workshop will be offered,

along with orchid displays and vendors from around the state.

The orchid show and sale is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday at the Neighborhood Community Center, 1845 Park

Ave., Costa Mesa.
