Student wins $10,000

in scholarships

Laguna Beach High School senior Rebecca Johnson won $10,000 in

scholarships Wednesday night.

The editor of the student paper, Johnson was among four students

from Orange County honored with the Student Leadership Award,

presented each year by the Irvine Co.

To be eligible for the awards, students are required to have a

grade-point average of at least 3.0 and be a college-bound senior

from one of 15 participating high schools in the Irvine, Laguna,

Newport-Mesa, Tustin and Orange school districts.

The judging is based on students’ community service,

extracurricular activities, academic achievement and other

accomplishments or qualities that demonstrate a student’s potential

one day to be an outstanding leader.

“The commitment and dedication exhibited by each of these students

-- including our four finalists -- is admirable and humbling,” said

Dan Young, group senior vice president of entitlement and public

affairs. “We are impressed with their self-confidence, enthusiasm and

perseverance as demonstrated through their involvement in community

service, extracurricular activities and other endeavors.”

During the past 18 years, the company has awarded scholarships to

more than 500 students.
