Sculpture taken from gallery countertop

A bronze sculpture was reported stolen this week from a North

Laguna art gallery.

The statue, titled “Naiad,” depicts a nude woman reclining on a

five-inch marble base and is valued at $6,000. Police believe the

artwork was stolen between 1 and 5:30 p.m. on Saturday from the

Whitney Gallery, at 350 N. Coast Highway.

The statue was taken from a countertop by someone who entered the

gallery during business hours, Sgt. Darin Lenyi said.

Anyone with information on the theft can call Investigations at

(949) 497-0377.

Woman hit in crosswalk remains hospitalized

The Laguna woman who was struck by a car while walking through a

crosswalk on April 20 remains in critical condition.

Mission Hospital representatives would not go into detail on

Meltem Narter’s treatment, though Sgt. Jason Kravetz said she is

expected to survive.

Narter, 42, remains at the hospital after suffering head injuries

in the crash, which occurred at the intersection of Glenneyre and

Brooks streets.

No charges have been filed against the driver, 60-year-old Laguna

Beach resident Gayle Cleigh, police said.
