The Sage Hill School boys volleyball team exacted revenge on visiting

Brethren Christian with a 25-15, 25-15, 26-24 Academy League victory

Friday.

Senior outside hitter Kevin Joyce led the Lightning (12-1, 7-1 in

league), who moved into a tie with Brethren Christian for the league

lead, with 21 kills, 11 digs and five blocks while Macsun Frederick

tallied 11 kills, six digs and five blocks. Julian Smith-Newman

tallied 34 assists for the Lightning, who lost to Brethren Christian

(7-1 in league) in four games in the teams’ prior meeting this

season.

CdM earns share of title

* VOLLEYBALL: The visiting Corona del Mar boys volleyball handled

Calvary Chapel, 25-9, 25-12, 25-14, to improve to 8-0 in the Pacific

Coast League Friday.

Austin Brawner had eight kills, followed by Jake Cancellieri’s

seven attacks for the Sea Kings, ranked No. 4 in Division II. Grant

Almquist dished out 14 assists and Dominic Rubino added 15 to help

CdM secure at least a share of the league title.

Eagles swoop to gold

* VOLLEYBALL: The Estancia High boys volleyball team qualified for

the gold bracket at the Redondo Union tournament at West Torrance

High Friday by taking two out of three matches. The Eagles beat

Carson, 25-13, 25-13, and beat Peninsula, 25-17, 25-21, before losing to Woodbridge, 26-24, 25-20. Middle blockers Scott Sankey, Dallas

Kopps and Kris Hartwell played well.

Loper downs Warriors

* BASEBALL: Sage Hill School shut out hosts Brethren Christian,

5-0, in an Academy League game Friday. Matt Loper struck out four

batters in four innings for the Lightning. He also collected four

hits and two RBIs to help Sage Hill improve to 10-7, 7-4 in league.

Hwang wins 200 IM

* SWIMMING: The Orange Coast College men’s swimming team sits in

second place while the Coast women’s team is in fourth after 10

events of the state championships Friday at Ventura College.

Jason Hwang claimed the men’s 200-yard individual medley (1:54.48)

and teamed with Chris Hunter, Max Wong and Roger Wong to win the 200

free relay (1:26.01). The quartet took second in the 400 medley relay

(3:32.97).

Sara Natalizio placed second in the women’s 100 IM (1:00.70) while

Shannon Maxfield placed fourth in the 500 free (5:18.94).

OCC players advance

* TENNIS: Orange Coast sophomore Leah Becker advanced to the

singles quarterfinals in the Southern California regional tournament

at Fullerton College Friday, defeating Karina Gutierrez of Long Beach

City, 6-0, 6-1.

Becker and teammate Sabrina Tanamal are seeded third in doubles

and also advanced to the quarterfinals. Both the singles and doubles

quarterfinals are today at Fullerton. The winners advance to the

state championships May 7-8.

Mesa pounds 15 hits

* BASEBALL: Costa Mesa High pounded out 15 hits en route to a 9-3

victory over visiting Bolsa Grande in a nonleague game Friday.

The Mustangs opened up the game with back-to-back doubles by Alex

Pisarski and Justin Peterson. Jeff Waldron hit a two-run double with

two outs in the four-run first inning for Costa Mesa (11-9).

Andrew Sanford went 3 for 4 with two runs scored, Waldron also

went 3 for 4 with two runs scored plus two RBIs and Pisarski added

two doubles and a run scored.

Patriots too much

* SOFTBALL: Oxford Academy beat host Sage Hill, 7-0, Friday in

Academy League play. The Patriots are 6-0 in league and dropped Sage

Hill to 6-10, 2-4 in league.

Rebecca Hembarsky and Jessica Torina both hit doubles in the sixth

inning for Sage Hill, but the Lightning failed to score because a

baserunner was ejected from the game for failing to slide home.

Estancia edged, 7-6

* BASEBALL: The Estancia High baseball team traveled to Saddleback

for a 7-6 loss Friday in Golden West League action. Senior Brad Young

had three RBIs on a 2 for 4 night at the plate with two doubles and

two runs scored. Matt Ronquillo also went 2 for 4 with a double and

two RBIs for the Eagles (3-16, 0-9 in league).

Lions avoid shutout

* BASEBALL: Vanguard avoided a shutout with one run in the ninth

inning, but still lost, 9-1, to nonconference host Chapman Friday.

Nikolaus Crouch led the Lions (12-33) with a 2-for-3 performance.

Matt Voorhies contributed Vanguard’s RBI. Jason Mooneyham went 2 for

3 with two RBIs and a run scored for Chapman (28-11).
