An epic beginning

It isn’t even summer yet, but you wouldn’t have known it last week.

There were hot, hot temperatures and, even more importantly for

surfers, a huge swell that battered West Newport, The Wedge and,

spectacularly, El Morro.

Usually, these southern hemisphere swells happen deep in summer’s

heart. But we weren’t even out of April.

While it was awful to read of injuries caused by the crashing

surf, that swell has visions of warm water and thick peaks dancing in

our heads. An epic summer surely awaits.

Of course, as any surfer knows, having said word one about the

waves means there won’t be another swell until ... we’ll see.
