OCC wins varsity eight

The Orange Coast College men’s varsity eight boat edged UC Davis in a

photo finish to win the featured race at the Western Intercollegiate

Rowing Association championships Sunday on Lake Natoma, near

Sacramento.

The OCC boat, consisting of Danny Johnson, Tyler Wilcox, Roman

Roudeyev, Jake Carr, Wes Temple, Steve Egner, J.T. Eger, Brian Moran

and coxswain Ashley Thomas, completed the 2,000-meter course in 6

minutes, 1.5 seconds.

UC Davis (6:01.6) was a mere two inches behind, OCC Coach Larry

Moore said.

OCC (6:15.6) finished second to UC Davis (6;12.5) in the junior

varsity eight final, though the Pirates topped the field in the

second novice eight (freshmen) event, with a time of 6:16. UC Davis

was second in 6:24.5.

OCC (6:13.6) was second in the men’s novice eight final, finishing

just more than a second behind UC Davis.

The OCC women were third in the novice eight (7:12.1) and third in

the varsity four Sunday.

The OCC men will compete in the East Coast Athletic Conference

national invitational rowing championships Saturday and Sunday in

Worcester, Mass.

Matadors rally past UCI

* BASEBALL: Host Cal State Northridge belted back-to-back,

eighth-inning home runs to break a 5-5 tie and claim a 7-5 Big West

Conference baseball victory over UC Irvine Sunday.

The loss, the second of the three-game series against Northridge,

which entered the weekend 0-9 in conference play, drops the Anteaters

to 28-13-1, 5-7 in conference.

With nine conference games remaining, UCI sits in a three-way tie

for fourth with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (which hosts UCI for three

games beginning Friday) and UC Santa Barbara. The three teams are

three games behind third-place UC Riverside.

Senior second baseman Matt Fisher led four Anteaters with two

hits. He was 2 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIs.
