Eagles’ Sostak seizes first-day Golden West lead

Estancia High sophomore Marcus Sostak, runner-up at last year’s

Golden West League boys golf championships, showed he is intent on

claiming the top prize this year by firing a 4-under-par 66 in the

first 18 holes of the 36-hole event at the Costa Mesa Golf & Country

Club’s Mesa Linda course.

Sostak, who takes a four-shot lead into today’s final round, joins

five other Estancia players to make the 12-player cut.

Also back to vie for four berths into the CIF Southern region

individual championships, scheduled May 17.

Greg Les (73), Nick Lettieri (75), Garrett McMasters (77), Brendon

Flannery (78) and Jason Les (81) all advanced from Estancia.

Costa Mesa High’s Billy Jackson, Robert Angle and Al Rodriguez all

shot 82 and missed the cut.

Sage Hill earns CIF bid

GOLF: The Sage Hill School boys golf team defeated Capistrano

Valley Christian, 421-448, Monday to earn the Academy League’s

second-place berth in the CIF South Coast divisional team

championships.

The tiebreaker match was scored simultaneously with the first day

of the league individual finals at the San Clemente Municipal golf

course.

Sage sophomore Josh Chen shot 3-over-par 75 and ranks third

heading into Wednesday’s concluding round at El Niguel Country Club

in Laguna Niguel.

Sage Hill’s Rob Greenfield (82) and Geoffrey Grant (83) are also

among the 13 individuals to advance.

Matt Pearce from St. Margaret’s (69) is the first-day leader.

Four Sailors advance

* GOLF: Michael Benvenuti (3-over-par 75), Davis Pemstein (76),

Rhett Palmer (79) and David Motschenbacher (79) are among 18 who

advanced to today’s second day of the Sea View League boys golf

championships at San Luis Rey Downs near San Diego.

Benvenuti (fifth) and Pemstein (sixth) will try to earn one of the

league’s five berths to the CIF Southern regional championships May

17.

Foothill’s Kurt Katnik (70) is the first-day leader.

Seahawks edge Mesa

* VOLLEYBALL: Ryan Bagwell and Garrett Walthers had 10 kills

apiece and the Costa Mesa boys volleyball team combined for 17 stuff

blocks, but visiting Ocean View claimed a 25-23, 25-17, 22-25, 20-25,

15-10 Golden West League victory Monday.

CdM’s Tilsen moves on

* GOLF: Corona del Mar High junior Ben Tilsen was the lone Sea

King to advance from the first day of the two-day Pacific Coast

League boys golf championships Monday at El Prado Golf Course in

Chino.

Tilsen shot 7-over-par 72 to just make the cut, as 13 move on to

Wednesday’s final 18 holes at the same site.

Anteaters perform well

* TRACK AND FIELD: The UC Irvine men’s and women’s track and field

teams recorded 28 personal or season bests in the Steve Scott

invitational at heat-baked Anteater Stadium Sunday.

Junior Scott Jarvis’ eight-place time of 52.26 in the 400-meter

hurdles was the fifth-fastest in UCI annals.

The men’s 1,600 relay of Jarvis, Curtis Lehmann, Dayne Comrie and

Omar Lopez finished second in a season-best 3:10.97, just shy of the

NCAA regional qualifying time of 3:10.84.

Senior Elias Moreno won his heat of the 200 in 21.74 and placed

ninth overall. His time of 10.82 in the 100 was ninth-fastest in the

field of 43. Lopez’ time of 48.38 in the 400 was eighth among 39

competitors.

In the triple jump, junior Patrick Grogan finished third with a

personal-best 48 feet, 6 inches.

Senior Jon Stewart was fourth in the javelin with a season-best

mark of 195-4, junior Joe Lourenco was fourth in the long jump at

23-9 and senior Weston Motoyasu was fifth in the high jump at 6-6

3/4.

Senior Derek Kingrey placed fifth in the discus throw (160-5) and

sophomore Brian Moon was seventh (156-7).

Comrie, a freshman, was ninth in the 400 hurdles in 53.02.

In women’s action, freshman Orlisha Henlon (5-6 in the high jump),

Erin Curtis (a season-best 12-9 1/2 in the pole vault) and senior

Jenny Liou (11:31.18 in the 3,000 steeplechase) all finished fourth.

Freshman Kim Handel was fifth in the 5,000 in 18:42.65 and senior

Tessa Cendejas was seventh in the 1,500 in 4:35.84.

Junior Kimberly Harper was seventh in the long jump (17-11 3/4)

and senior Janelle Del Soldato’s season-best time of 2:13.29 in the

800 was good for eighth place.

‘Eaters 11th in MPSF

* WATER POLO: The UC Irvine women’s water polo team, ranked No.

17, completed its season Sunday by finishing 11th in the Mountain

Pacific Sports Federation tournament at the Joint Forces Training

Center in Los Alamitos.

UCI defeated the University of the Pacific, 8-5, in the 11th-place

game to finish 10-21. The Anteaters were 3-8 in the MPSF.

Freshman Robyn Kaake had a career-high five goals and senior

goalkeeper Sun Chamblee had seven saves for the Anteaters.

Kaake finished the season with a team-high 47 goals, followed by

senior Erica Horman’s 35 and Melissa Fernandez’s 34.

Chamblee had 176 saves this season and is the school career leader

with 712.
