Massingill’s grand slam propels Pelicans over Red Wings

Jackson Massingill hit a grand slam in the sixth inning to pace the

Newport Harbor Baseball Association Pelicans to a 11-3 victory over the Costa Mesa Red Wings in a Pony Baseball game Saturday.

Kyle Lawrence went 1 for 3 with two RBIs while Brett Adams

finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs in the offensive outburst.

Peter Kinney and Ned Lyon each went 2 for 3 while Wes LeClay, Nick

Svendsen and Travis Sorenson each scored twice for the Pelicans, who

won their third in a row.

Adams struck out three in three innings to pick up the win in

relief.

In Pony other action:

* Pelicans 2, Green Jackets 1:

Svendsen struck out four and induced 14 groundball outs in a

four-hitter to lead the Pelicans, April 28.

Massingill went 2 for 2 with a run scored and one RBI while Kinney

finished 1 for 2 with an RBI.

Lyon made sound plays in center field.

Adams, Michael Razzano, Lawrence and Kinney made up the infield.

* Lawrence and Svendsen combined on a one-hitter as the Newport

Harbor Baseball Association Pelicans defeated the Costa Mesa Angels,

6-3, on April 24.

Lawrence started and went five innings, striking out four while

allowing three runs and one hit. Svendsen struck out four with no

walks in two scoreless innings.

Adams went 1 for 3 with a double and three RBIs to lead Newport,

which scored all its runs in the sixth inning.

Massingill finished with two RBIs and one hit, while Lawrence and

Razzano added doubles.

* Pelicans 9, Costa Mesa Yankees 9:

Both teams combined for 25 hits in a game that was stopped after

the 2 1/2-hour time limit on April 21.

Adams went 2 for 4 with a triple and home run and finished with

five RBIs while Massingill was 3 for 4 with an RBI.

Lyon went 4 for 4 while Lawrence finished 3 for 4 with an RBI.

Svendsen struck out six while allowing just two hits in four

innings.

Razzano and Marshall Stamper led the Pelicans’ defense.

In Bronco (ages 11-12) play:

* Giants 8, Braves 3:

Dylon Gravelle slammed two home runs over the center-field fence

in his first two at-bats to lead the Giants.

Jason Harris (2 for 3) and Alex Maddox (2 for 2) combined to limit

the Braves to three hits. Harris struck out six in three scoreless

innings while Maddox struck out five in two scoreless innings.

Hayden Cornwell went 2 for 2 with two doubles for the Giants.

Michael Salam struck out three and allowed one run for the Braves.

Preston Wheeler added a triple.

* Dodgers 14, Marlins 4:

Logan Mowrey, Austin Bagby, Ryan Boulger, Brett Olinger, Levi

Rowe, Andrew Taylor, Sean MacInnis, Ryan Hatcher and Alex Arthur all

had hits for the Dodgers while Olinger, Mowrey and Rowe each made

sound defensive plays in an April 27 game.

Bagby, Jacob Trobman and Boulger led the Dodgers on the mound.
