The Newport Harbor High boys volleyball team capped an undefeated Sea

View League season with a 25-23, 26-24, 18-25, 18-25, 15-12 victory

over host Woodbridge Thursday.

Morgan Govaars tallied 19 kills and 10 digs while Gavin Galey

added 18 kills and eight digs for the Sailors (21-7, 10-0), who

played the final three games without junior Brett Perrine, who went

down with a knee injury, Coach Dan Glenn said.

Sea Kings a perfect 10

* VOLLEYBALL: For the second consecutive year, the Corona del Mar

High boys volleyball team went undefeated in Pacific Coast League

play, capping this year’s title with a 25-21, 24-26, 25-23, 25-15

victory over visiting Laguna Beach Thursday.

Tom and Kevin Welch each slammed 17 kills while Austin Brawner

added nine and Jake Cancellieri tallied six for PCL champion CdM

(19-9, 10-0 in league).

Senior setter Dominic Rubino tallied 43 assists and four digs

while Ben Applebee added four digs to go with three blocks each from

Cancellieri, Brawner and Kevin Welch.

Pairings for CIF Southern Section Division II playoff will be

announced Monday.

Van Hiel tallies third no-no

* SOFTBALL: Corona del Mar High freshman pitcher Holly Van Hiel

continued her masterful spring in the circle, tossing her third

no-hitter this season in a 10-0, five-inning victory over visiting

Laguna Beach Thursday.

Van Hiel struck out six and walked one while retiring the side in

order in the first, second and fifth innings to improve to 7-3 this

season.

Laguna Beach had two baserunners and only one reached as far as

second.

Allie Duernberger went 3 for 4 with a triple to extend her hitting

streak to nine games and tallied three RBIs and two runs scored while

Jackie Manning was 3 for 3 with a run scored for CdM (13-8, 3-5 in

league).

CdM drops first in 2 years

* TENNIS: Host Northwood High sent the Corona del Mar High boys

tennis team to its first Pacific Coast League loss in two years with

a 10-8 victory Thursday to conclude the regular season.

CdM (19-1, 7-1 in league), though, was without two of its top

singles guns in Carsten Ball and Wesley Miller, who were each in Las

Vegas preparing for the United States Tennis Association’s Muterspaw

Championships.

Spencer Reitz and Ryan Caughren each swept in singles while

Brennan Roberts and Alex Nguyen won two of three doubles sets for

CdM, which last lost a league match in 2002 to University, Coach Tim

Mang said.

The Sea Kings will compete in the PCL finals beginning Monday at

Tesoro.

Miller is seeded first in singles while Reitz is seeded second.

Sage earns share of title

* VOLLEYBALL: Sage Hill School’s boys volleyball team won a share

of its first Academy League championship in the program’s four-year

history with a 23-25, 25-14, 25-14, 25-14 victory over visiting

Capistrano Valley Christian Thursday to close the regular season.

Senior outside hitter Kevin Joyce tallied 25 kills while Macsun

Frederick added 12 and Jake Lezere tallied eight for the Lightning

(15-1, 9-1 in league), who tied Brethren Christian for the league

crown.

Julian Smith-Newman amassed 45 assists for Sage Hill, ranked

fourth in CIF Southern Section Division V.

A coin flip Monday will determine seedings for the upcoming CIF

playoffs, Sage Coach Merja Connolly-Freund said.

Khoury loses in final

* TENNIS: Top-seeded Michael McClune from Woodbridge High denied

Newport Harbor sophomore Robert Khoury his second straight Sea View

League individual title with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) victory Thursday, the

second and final day of the league championships at Heritage Park in

Irvine.

Khoury, the No. 3 seed, defeated Woodbridge’s Shimpei Suzuki, the

No. 2 seed, 6-1, 6-4, in the semifinals.

Newport freshman Jake Fleming, who lost to McClune, 6-0, 3-6, 6-2,

in the semifinals, claimed third place when Suzuki retired.

VU advances to final

* TENNIS: Vanguard opened the NAIA region II tournaments with

perfect 5-0 victories in semifinal action Thursday at Lynn Abbott

Tennis Courts in Santa Barbara.

The VU men (19-4) defeated Point Loma in the first round while the

top-seeded VU women (22-1) topped Westmont to advance to today’s

final. The men face Azusa Pacific today at 9 a.m. while the women

play Point Loma at noon.

Mesa finishes strong

* VOLLEYBALL: Costa Mesa High’s Ryan Bagwell had a season-high 21

digs along with team highs in kills (15), stuff blocks (six) and

service aces (five) Thursday in Golden West League boys volleyball

action as the host Mustangs (9-11, 5-7 in league) completed their

season with a five-game victory over Santa Ana, 25-19, 25-21, 27-29,

20-25, 15-13.

Andrew Melcer (45 assists), Garrett Walthers (11 kills and five stuff blocks), Mitch Mandel (11 kills) and senior Mike Torrenueva,

who started his first varsity match and contributed throughout, also

sparked Mesa, which finished tied for fourth in league with

Westminster. Santa Ana finished 0-12 in league.

Pirates drop final game

* BASEBALL: Saddleback College kept it playoff hopes alive

Thursday with a 13-4 Orange Empire Conference victory over visiting

Orange Coast.

P.J. Sandoval pitched the first five innings and struck out 10

Pirates without a walk as he improved to 9-3 for the Gauchos (24-12,

11-10 in the OEC). OCC’s Brandon Lutgendorf, 2-3, suffered the loss.

Catcher Dustin Hicks was 2 for 4 with one RBI for OCC (12-21, 6-15),

which concluded their season.

Sage’s Gordon shines

* TRACK AND FIELD: Junior Laura Gordon will compete in four

events, the most of any Sage Hill School boy or girl athlete, when

the Academy League track and field finals begin today at 3:30 p.m. at

Saddleback College.

Sage Hill will have 14 boys and 11 girls competing.

Gordon qualified first in the triple jump and 300-meter hurdles in

the preliminaries while placing second in the long jump and 100

hurdles.

On the boys side, sophomore Zach Chandy qualified first in the 100

and 200 and second in the 400. Teammate Matt Sanford had the best

preliminary time in the 400. Braden Barnett qualified first in the

shot put and discus for the boys while junior Amy Werblin placed

first in the shotput and second in the discus during the girls

prelims.

Other boys who qualified for Friday’s finals include: Mike Voge

(800, 1,600 and long jump), Tim Lefler (800 and 1,600), Chris

Chiboucas (1,600 and 3,200), Jimmy O’Hare (shot put and high jump),

Chris Lee (triple jump, 110-high and 300-intermediate hurdles), Eric

Goode (110 HH and 300 IH) and Andrew Winterman (110 HH, 300 IH).

Both Sage boys 400 and 1,600 relay teams qualified first.

Chris Neale, Ian Dull, Barnett and Sanford comprised the 400 team

while Neale, Sanford, Voge and Chandy led the 1,600 squad.

Girls qualifiers include: Kelsey Rose (high jump, 100 and 200),

Erica Faris (800 and 1,600), Mollie McGann (1,600 and 3,200), Amelia

Fletcher (triple jump), Megan McGillivray (shot put) and Megan Curry

(shot put and discus).

UCI golfers are No. 10

* GOLF: The UC Irvine men’s golf team remained at No. 10 in the

latest Pacific region rankings released Wednesday as head coach Paul

Smolinski remains optimistic that the Anteaters will be selected for

a NCAA regional berth next week.

This ranking is based on all results reported to Golfstat through

May 4.

The Pacific region is allocated 12 teams into the NCAA regional

championships, but is required to rank other teams for consideration

for at-large berths into the regionals.

Sage Hill bested

* SOFTBALL: Allison Gonzalez tripled into the right-center-field

gap and scored on an errant relay throw on the play, but that was all

the scoring for visiting Sage Hill School in a 5-1 Academy League softball loss to Brethren Christian Wednesday.

Rebecca Hembarsky struck out six in a complete-game pitching

performance for the Lightning (6-12-1, 2-6 in league).
