CdM rallies to top T-wolves

Nik Palchikoff pounded a two-out, three-run double to the gap in

left-center field and scored on a throwing error to lead the Corona

del Mar High baseball team to a come-from-behind, 7-4 win over

visiting Northwood in Pacific Coast League action Monday.

The Sea Kings (19-5, 14-0 in league), who clinched the PCL

championship last week, trailed, 4-3, in the fifth, when Palchikoff

came up with the clutch base hit.

Barrett Sprowl and Tyler Lance had two hits each, including one

home run apiece. Sprowl’s solo homer, his fourth of the season, came

in the first. Lance also had a solo shot, his third of the year, in

the second inning.

Josh Bradbury connected for his ninth home run of the season, a

solo blast, in the third.

Ben Maggard came on in relief with two outs in the fourth. He

retired eight in a row, before giving up a hit, but then induced a

double-play grounder to end the game. Maggard improved to 2-0

Northwood dropped to 17-9, 8-6

Mesa makes its point

* SOFTBALL: Uyen Mai, Jane-E Yamamoto and Christy Gregory

collected three hits each to help lead the Costa Mesa High softball

team to a 9-3 Golden West League victory over host Westminster

Monday.

Mesa Coach Sharon Uhl said the Mustangs (9-15, 5-6 in league) can

not make the playoffs, but they are determined to finish out strong.

Westminster (8-3 in league), which entered the game in first in the

Golden West League, had 11 hits and left 12 runners stranded.

Mai and Yamamoto each contributed a double and three RBIs.

“We’re just making a point,” said Uhl, whose team had to forfeit

three league games. “We’re telling everybody that we should be

there.”

Linda Kohan had two home runs for the Lions.

Nguyen-Pham advance

* TENNIS: Corona del Mar High juniors Alex Nguyen and Sean Pham

advanced to Wednesday’s semifinals by winning twice Monday at the

Pacific Coast League doubles tennis championships at Tesoro High.

Nguyen and Pham, the No. 4 seed, defeated Blake Emory and Mike

Fink from Tesoro, 6-2, 6-7, 6-1, in the Round of 16.

The Sea King duo then topped Jon Vaughn and Ryo Furukawa from

University, 6-2, 6-2, in a quarterfinal.

CdM ties for 10th

* GOLF: The Corona del Mar High boys golf team tied for 10th

Monday at the CIF South Coast divisional team championships at El

Prado Golf Course in Chino.

The Sea Kings were paced by Rob Ury (3-over-par 75), while Ben

Tilsen (77), Alex Chikovani (77), Zach Rabinovich (79) and Jamie

Bloom (83) also scored for the Sea Kings.

St. Margaret’s and Tesoro finished first and second to advance to

Thursday’s team championships in Santa Barbara.

Estancia golfers 12th

* GOLF: The Estancia High boys golf team finished 12th among 22

schools at the CIF Southern divisional team tournament Monday at Los

Serranos Golf Course in Chino Hills.

Marcus Sostak paced the Eagles, shooting 7-over-par 79, while

Garrett McMasters (85), Austin Serr (86), Nick Lettieri (88) and Greg

Les (90) also scored for the Eagles.

Costa Mesa also competed, but scores were not available.

Only the top two teams advanced to Thursday’s team championship

finals in Santa Barbara.

Lions master Mustangs

* BASEBALL: Host Westminster High scored five runs in the second

and cruised to an 11-0 Golden West League baseball victory Monday

over Costa Mesa.

The Mustangs (12-11, 6-5 in league) need to beat Santa Ana

Wednesday and hope for other help to force a third-place playoff with

the Saints.

Alex Pisarski, Justin Peterson, Jeff Waldron and Alex Dominguez

all had hits for the Mustangs.

Westminster improved to 16-8-1, 9-2.

Jones paces Pirates

* TRACK AND FIELD: Orange Coast College sophomore Ava Jones won

the 5,000 meters and the 10,000 and was second in the 1,500 Saturday

to help the Pirates women’s track and field team finish second at the

Southern California regionals.

Jones’ winning time in the 5,000 was 17:21.92, while she topped

the 10,000 field in 38:13.91. Her runner-up time in the 1,500 was

4:36.57.

Ludi Valdez, an Estancia High product, was the other event winner

for the Pirates. She won the 3,000 steeplechase in 11:23.96 and was also fourth in the 5,000 in 18:10.42.

Hanni Geider, another Estancia product, was second in the 400

hurdles (1:06.29), while Sandra Montoya (17:59.02 in the 5,000) and

Joanna Williams (5 feet in the jigh jump) produced valuable

third-place points.

Orange Coast’s women totaled 103 points, just off the pace of

victorious Mt. San Antonio (109 1/2).

Former Estancia stars Humberto Rojas (3:55.63 for third in the

1,500) and Zack Novak (fourth in the high jump with a clearance of

6-6) were the top men’s finishers for the Pirates, who finished

eighth in the team standings.

Rojas was fifth in the 5,000 in 15:12.31. Other OCC fifth-place

men’s finishers included Peter Bas (49.42 in the 400), Kevin Porter

(6-4 in the high jump) and Jeremy Wooldridge (22-8 3/4 in the long

jump).

Ann Garton (2:17.52 in the 800) and Jenny Thompson (10-6 in the

pole vault) earned fifth-place finishes for the OCC women.

Irwin Salas (9:48.46 in the 3,000 steeplechase) and Porter (44-9

3/4 in the triple jump) added sixth-place showings for the Pirates.

Jessica Huerta was seventh in the 1,500 and eighth in the 10,000,

while Jasmine Geider (1:10.84 in the 400 hurdles), Sandra Montyoa

(39:58.44 in the 10,000) and Jane Alder (12:17.94 in the 3,000

steeplechase) were seventh in their respective events.

Bas was eighth in the men’s 400 hurdles, while Tayler Cusick was

eighth for the OCC women in the long jump.

OCC oarsmen struggle

* ROWING: The Orange Coast College crew’s novice eight boat posted

the top men’s finish Sunday at the East Coast Athletic Conference

national invitational rowing championships in Worcester, Mass.

The novice eight was sixth in its championship final in 6:31.25

over the 2,000-meter course at Lake Quinsigamond.

OCC’s varsity eight was second in the consolation final (6:05.31),

after finishing fifth in its morning championship semifinal heat.

The Pirates junior varsity eight won its consolation final

(6:29.4) after finishing fifth in a morning championship semifinal.

The OCC women’s varsity four finished third and the women’s novice

eight was sixth.

Lightning golfers 19th

* GOLF: The Sage Hill School boys golf team finished 19th at the

South Coast divisional team championships Monday at El Prado Golf

Course in Chino.

Josh Chen and Rob Greenfield shot 5-over-par 77, while Ryan Babush

(87), John Neff (89) and Geoffrey Grant (89) also contributed to the

Lightning scoring.

Wyman shines in loss

* SOFTBALL: Estancia High sophomore Allison Wyman smacked a triple

and scored three runs, but the Eagles’ softball team lost, 9-4, to

Golden West League visitor Orange Monday.

Estancia closes out the season 6-15, 3-9 in league. Orange

improved to 7-5 in Golden West League play.

Panthers blank Eagles

* BASEBALL: The Estancia High baseball team closed out the regular

season with an 11-0 Golden West League loss to visiting Orange

Monday.

The Eagles end the season, 3-19, 0-12 in league. Estancia

collected two hits, provided by seniors Eric Scheafer and Matt

Ronquillo.
