Padres, Cherney post shutout win

Ryan Cherney pitched a complete-game shutout to lead the Padres to a

4-0 win over the Giants in Costa Mesa National Little League Majors

division baseball action April 27.

The Padres’ offense was led by Ryan Burns, Ryan Barnett, Colin

Kincaid, Justin Batangan and Kevin Thomas. Cherney received defensive

help from Eusebio Castillo, Gian-Paul Stebbins and Jesus Rodriguez.

In Minor A action:

* Cubs 7, Yankees 1:

Chris Molina drove in four runs and Eddie Bisoso drove in two to

lift the Cubs to victory May 1. Nick Schimer, Graham Clevidence and

Derek Andrews contributed to the offensive output for the Cubs.

In other Minor A action:

* Cubs 3, Dodgers 0:

Molina had seven strikeouts in five innings for the Cubs April 24.

Schimer, Cole Mesinger and Tommy Fisher scored for the Cubs.

In Minor B play:

* Braves 13, Red Sox 12:

Gabriel Ruan singled home Lisa Hyndman to complete a

come-from-behind victory for the Braves May 1. Brad Wilson, Colin

Moran and Matt Thomas all hit doubles for the Braves. Joining in the

offensive outburst were Charles Nelson, Brandon Dieckhoff, Cassie

Stevenson, Ryan West, Branden Arceyut, Joshua Tierney and Sean

Golden.

In Farm Division action:

Kohler Ponsford hit a home run for the Padres April 27 against the

Marlins. It is believed to be the first home run in the division this

season hit over the left-field fence.

Christian Darrow, Bill Crosson, Mitchell Clevidence, Dante

Capoccia, William Reed and Ted Zoerner provided more offense for the

Padres. Garret Deutsh and Tyler Owens provided solid defense for the

Padres.

The Marlins were led defensively by Monolo Laguna, Daniel

Hernandez, Carter Vogel, Hunter Robinson and Nathan Savoy. Adam

Jeyarajah, Jake Brown and Will Odel had solid days at the plate for

the Marlins.

In Costa Mesa Little League Minor B action:

* Yankees 7, Padres 5:

Mike Martinez hit a ground-rule double and River Kapeller bunted

in the tying run for the Yankees in the fifth inning.

Frankie Farldow pitched for the Yankees and was backed up with

nice defensive plays by Kevin Salyer and Spencer Lindsay.

In Newport Harbor Baseball Association Pinto National action:

* Rockies vs. Dodgers:

Shaun Vetrovec hit a grand slam for the Rockies April 28. Parker

Monroe, Junior Najera and Nathan Chaness also scored runs for the

Rockies.

Rockies pitcher Bryan Shollin struck out all three batters he

faced and Adam Josephson also pitched an inning. Josephson also hit a

two-run single.

Danny Willett, Joshua Eakin, Davis Verheyen and Michael Reo also

played well for the Rockies.

* In Newport Harbor Baseball Association action:

Dodgers 8, Mustangs 2:

Patrick Overstreet hit a two-out, inside-the-park grand slam in

the third inning to lift the Dodgers to an 8-2 victory over the

Mustangs at Bonita Canyon Park May 8.
