Corona del Mar High junior Wesley Miller defeated Tesoro’s Nick

Meister, 7-5, 6-1, to win the Pacific Coast League tennis singles

championship Monday at Tesoro High.

CdM the league champion and the No. 1 seed in the CIF Southern

Section Division I playoffs, also claimed the doubles crown. Sea King

juniors Alex Nguyen and Sean Pham emerged victorious when

University’s Nick Mock and Kei Muta retired in the second set, due to

an ankle injury sustained in the match by Muta.

Mock-Muta won the first set, 7-6 (9-7 in the tie-breaker), but the

CdM duo forged a 5-2 second-set lead when the Trojan twosome retired.

Miller defeated CdM freshman Ryan Coughren, 6-2, 6-1, in one

semifinal, while Meister topped Sea King junior Spencer Reitz, 6-4,

6-4, in the other semifinal.

Reitz, battling an ankle injury the last three weeks, then retired

in the third-place match, after Coughren built a 4-0 lead in the

eight-game pro set.

The third-place finish might pay off for Coughren, who may replace

Meister in the CIF individual championships. CdM Coach Tim Mang said

Meister will likely bow out of CIF competition to compete in a

national junior tournament.

Miller is 35-2 this season in singles, including a 22-0 against

PCL foes.
