Edna West of Huntington Beach reached her 100th birthday on April

6. She celebrated the occasion with friends and family members at an

open house buffet on Sunday at Wycliffe Gardens, a retirement center

where Edna has lived since 1980. Music has been an essential interest

throughout her life, including many years of directing choirs. She

was an organist or pianist in several schools and churches throughout

the years. ... Marine Corps Reserve Pfc. Michael R. Maxwell, son of

Deborah and Robert Maxwell of Huntington Beach, recently completed 12

weeks of basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San

Diego. Maxwell and fellow recruits began their training at 5 a.m., by

running three miles and performing calisthenics. He was also trained

in subjects including marksmanship, hand-to-hand combat and assorted

weapons training. Maxwell and fellow recruits ended the training

phase with “The Crucible,” a 54-hour, team exercise culminating in an

emotional ceremony in which recruits are presented the Marine Corps

Emblem and addressed as Marines for the first time in their careers.

Maxwell is a 2001 graduate of Edison High School. ... Daniel Thomson,

a 2003 graduate of Ocean View High School, has been selected to be

drum major for the UCLA Marching Band starting in the 2004-05

academic year. ... Huntington Beach residents Beth Chilcott, Nicole

Scauri and Kevin Wilson of Team He’s So Sensitive will compete in the

upcoming BALANCE BAR Adventure Sprint race in Orchard Beach, N.Y. on

May 23. The Adventure Sprints feature courses approximately 20 miles

in length, and participants compete in teams of three to complete

five to eight miles of trail running, 10 to 15 miles of mountain

biking, one to three miles of kayaking and six to eight special

tests. ... Joshua Segal, a student at Washington University in St.

Louis, was named to the dean’s list for his work in the Fall 2003

Semester. To be named to the list, students must earn a 3.5 GPA.

Segal is the son of Huntington Beach resident Gary Segal and is a

graduate of Marina High School. ... Huntington Beach student Walter

Clint McManigal graduated from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln

with a bachelor’s degree. The graduation ceremony was held on

Saturday.
