Breakers fall to Tesoro

Tesoro High, behind the strength of an eight-run outburst in the

second inning Monday, went on to post a 14-3 Pacific Coast League

baseball victory over host Laguna Beach.

The Breakers actually led, 2-0, after one inning. But the Titans

scored eight runs in the second inning, then put the game away with

five more runs in the sixth.

Tesoro racked up 16 hits off three Laguna pitchers.

In softball, Northwood jumped out to a 10-0 lead and went on to

record a 12-2 PCL victory at Laguna.

The Timberwolves scored four runs in each of the first two

innings, then scored twice in the third frame, to go up, 10-0.

They led, 12-0, before Laguna scored twice in the fifth inning.

The Breakers managed just one hit in the game, while Northwood had

14 hits.

In a previous league outing, Laguna was no-hit in a 10-0 loss at

Corona del Mar.

In boys’ volleyball, Laguna dropped a was edged by host Corona del

Mar, 21-25, 26-24, 23-25, 15-25, in the league finale for both

squads.

The Sea Kings claimed the PCL title with a 10-0 record; the Breakers finished with a 7-3 mark.

Laguna will open the CIF-Southern Section Division II playoffs

Tuesday at 7 p.m.. They Breakers, who received a first-round bye,

will host the winner of today’s first-round match between Canyon of

Canyon Country and LittlerockLaguna’s outstanding boys’ volleyball

heritage was on display last Friday when the current varsity squad

took on the alumni in a match titled, “Legends” vs. Varsity, at

Dugger Gym.

The following players composed the starting lineup for the alumni:

Scott Fortune (1984), middle blocker: Was 1984 Orange County

Player of the Year, South Coast league MVP, All CIF 3-time

All-American at Stanford, three-time member of U.S. Olympic Team

(bronze in 1992, gold in 1988).

Lance Stewart (1981), setter: Current head coach of the Laguna

boys’ varsity team. Was 1981 All-Orange County & All-CIF, Cal Hi

State Player of the Year. Also All-CIF in Basketball and Football;

1980 South Coast League MVP in Football. As a coach won back-to-back

CIF and State Division I and national titles in girls’ volleyball.

Bill Christiansen (1973), middle blocker: Two-time prep and

collegiate (UCLA) All-American; only county player to make 1973

first-team All-CIF; current girls’ volleyball coach at Corona del

Mar.

Adam Johnson (1983), outside hitter: 1983 South Coast League

Co-MVP; All-Orange County; three-time collegiate All-American at USC;

1986 College Player of the Year; listed No. 5 overall in career beach

volleyball earnings; named to USA Volleyball 75th Anniversary

All-Beach Team.

Dusty Dvorak (1976), opposite: Member of 1975 CIF championship

squad; 1976 first-team All-CIF; four-time collegiate All-American at

USC; 1980 NCAA Tournament MVP; member of gold medal winning U.S. team

at 1984 Olympics; 1998 inductee into US Volleyball Hall-of-Fame.

Steve Blue (1983), outside hitter: 1983 first-team All-Orange

County; first-team All-South Coast League; second-team All-CIF;

four-year letterman at Stanford.

Alumni substitutes included:

Rudy Dvorak, (1982), right side/opposite: 1982 CIF, Cal-Hi State

and Orange County MVP; 1986 first-team All-American at USC; named to

1985 and 1986 All-NCAA Tournament Team; member of U.S. National Team.

Leif Hanson (1983), outside hitter: 1983 Division I CIF, Cal-Hi

State and Orange County Player-of-the-Year; 1982 second-team All-CIF.

Dave Sorrells (1964), defensive player: Current head boys’

volleyball coach at Costa Mesa High; previously has coached at La

Habra High and with club volleyball; veteran volleyball official at

high school and club levels.
