Youth track athletes set five records

Laguna Beach’s youth track team, coached by Fred Pichay, broke

five city records at the Southern California Municipal Athletic

Foundation Orange County Track and Field Championships held at

Trabuco Hills High.

Leading the Laguna contingent was Scott DeYoung, who won the Boys’

Divison 1994 400 meter dash and long jump.

DeYoung ran to a record time of 56.9 seconds in the 400-meter

dash, which was good for third-place. That time topped the 58.2

effort by Desmond Smith in 2002.

He also bettered the previous city mark in the long jump by more

than four feet, as his 18-feet-3 1/2 jump earned him a first-place

finish.

The previous city mark was 14-feet-2.

Crispin Collins was impressive in the Boys’ Division 1990 200

meter dash as he established a new city record with a time of 24.31,

which gave him a second-place finish in the division.

Collins’ time broke the previous record of 25.87, set in 1991 by

Matt Sheridan.

Collins also holds the city record for the 400-meter dash, which

he set with a 56.2 at the city meet held on March 13 at Laguna Beach

High. He broke Ryan Wolfe’s previous record of 1:00.79, set in 1997.

Joseph Rousseau finished third in the Boys’ Division 1994 800

meters with a city record time of 2:58.9. He broke Ricky Zona’s

record of 3:00.6, set in 2001.

Rousseau also was sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:18.

In the girls’ events, Marlee Grosher claimed first-place in the

Division 1996 long jump with a 10-feet-2. She finished third in the

400-meter dash, but her time of 1:35 set a new city record, breaking

by 3.28 seconds, the record she had set at March’s city meet.

Gerry Ardman ran to a city record time of 6:49.9 in Division

1991’s 1,600 meter run, and placed fourth in the high jump with a

mark of 3-feet-6.

Ardman’s time in the 1,600 meters bettered the previous city

record of 7:33 set by Bailey Monahan in 1998.

Christine Kinder finished first in the Girls’ Division 1993 long

jump with a 3-feet-8 and was eighth in the 200-meter dash at 35.1

seconds.

Teammate Lauren Henry was second in the Division 1992 high jump at

3-feet-8.

Madeline Hawkins finished seventh in the Girls’ Division 1994 800

meter run at 3:26.5 and was eighth in the long jump at 9-feet-7.

Other top boys’ performers included Raphael Vickers in third-place

in the Division 1991 softball throw at 136-feet-8, Geoffrey Hughes in

sixth-place in the Division 1994 50-meter dash at 9.0, Brett Dunlavey

was seventh in the Division 1995 50-meter dash at 9.0, Christopher

Barwick was eighth in the Division 1993 200-meter dash at 34.4 and

Adam Redding was ninth in the Division 1994 200-meter dash at 35.6.

The top four finishers in each event qualify for the youth

Southern California Track and Field Championships on May 29 at Gahr

High in Cerritos.
