Anteaters fall back in pack

Cal State Northridge leads the men’s competition entering final

action today in the Big West Conference tack and field championships

at UC Irvine’s Anteater Stadium.

The Matadors have 55 points after Friday’s action, followed by

Idaho with 45 and UC Santa Barbara with 37 1/3. Long Beach State is

sixth with 27, UC Irvine is seventh with 25 1/3 and Cal State

Fullerton is eighth with 20.

For the men Friday, Idaho senior Jan Eitel won his second straight

and third career title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of

8:59.25. Cal Poly’s Jeff Porto won the 10,000 meters in 30:36.48.

Long Beach State’s John Temidara won the high jump at 7 feet, 3

inches, Giovanni Lanaro of Cal State Fullerton placed first in the

pole vault (17-8 1/2), Jason Romero led a 1-2-3 finish by Cal State

Northridge in the long jump with a leap of 24-6 1/2, and Tomas

Fajardo of Northridge won the discus throw at 173-11.

UC Irvine senior Derek Kingrey was third in the discus throw with

a mark of 167-4, senior Weston Motoyasu was sixth in the high jump at

6-6 3/44, and junior Joe Lourenco was sixth in the long jump at

22-11 3/4. Sophomore Brian Moon finished seventh in the discus throw

with a mark of 160-5.

Defending champion Idaho leads the women’s competition with 59

points, followed by Cal Poly with 48 and Long Beach State and Cal

State Northridge with 47 each. UC Irvine is eighth with three points

and Cal State Fullerton is scoreless.

UC Irvine senior Jenny Liou was sixth in the steeplechase

(11:09.37), freshman Orlisha Henlon finished ninth in the high jump

(5-6), while junior Kimberly Harper was 10th in the high jump (5-4

1/4) and long jump (17-10 3/4).
