John Wayne Airport passengers using new gates at temporary

terminal

John Wayne Airport passengers are getting some relief from

bottlenecks and crowds at Gate 14 now that a new temporary terminal

has opened with three new gates. A second temporary terminal will

open in the fall, and both will be replaced by permanent gates in

less than five years.

* Former Newport Beach Mayor Ruthelyn Plummer died of cancer

Thursday at age 79. The longtime local resident served on the council

for 12 years beginning in 1980 and fought for improvements in West

Newport.

* Council members hope they’ve worked out a way to take over

control of tidelands in the city that are now being administered by

the county. The vote authorizes the city manager to enter into a deal

officials call revenue-neutral but the tidelands will remain in

county hands until both parties sign off.

* Cingular Wireless’ request to install at the southeast corner of

Superior Avenue and Coast Highway a 50-foot cellular tower that

exceeded height limits by 15 feet was put on hold Tuesday by council

members. Led by Councilman Steve Rosansky, members directed staff to

gather more information on whether the company could increase

cellular coverage by using existing phone poles or a less-dramatic

structure.
