Dodgers power past Padres

A.J. Roth hit two home runs to lead the Costa Mesa National Little

League Major Dodgers to a 13-1 mercy-rule victory over the

first-place Padres Saturday.

Roth drove in five runs with the homers.

Benny Seliner gave an excellent pitching performance and Eric

Mickelson drove in two runs with a double for the Dodgers (9-6).

Josh Dominguez, Coleman Brown, Tony Campo, Nico Ruan, Johnny

Valdez and Josh Hill each had one RBI.

Michael Markovsky, McCanne Sanford and Robert Fernandez all

contributed to the offensive onslaught.

In other Majors action:

* Padres 4, Giants 3:

Kevin Thomas tripled and scored on an error in the sixth inning to

give the

Padres their fourth straight win May 15.

Thomas went 3 for 3 while Daniel Derieg also tripled for the

first-place Padres (10-2).

Eusebio Castillo, Justin Batangan, Ryan Burns and Colin Kincaid

(two RBIs) all led the offense while Ryan Cherney tossed a complete

game.

Cherney was backed by a strong defense that turned two double

plays.

Burns, Castillo, Gian-Paul Stebbins and Kincaid led the defense.

* Dodgers 16, Costa Mesa American Athletics 2:

The Dodgers blasted 18 hits to support fine pitching performances

by Mickelson and Mike Markovsky.

Fernandez and Roth each went 3 for 3 to lead the offensive

onslaught. Markovsky, Brown and Ruan each had two hits and everyone

in the lineup had at least one hit.

In Minor A playoff action:

* Braves 6, Cubs 4:

Brody Henscheid, Zac Baldwin, Derek Cherney, Graham Sedano, Connor

Graham, Sammy Borkton and Juan Valdez all had hits for the Braves in

their playoff opener Saturday,

Henscheid, Parker Shoaff and Andres Hernandez all added strong

pitching.

In Minor B play:

* Cubs 11, Dodgers 5:

Trailing 4-2, the Cubs rallied with seven runs in the fifth and

two in the sixth and held the Dodgers to two hits in a playoff

opener.

Chad Fackler gave the Cubs a 5-4 lead with a three-run homer --

his seventh of the season -- that scored Chelsey Wyman and Art

Wisniewski.

Fackler also hit a home run in the sixth.

Jake Stone and Lucas DeLaTorre each drove in two runs while Adam

Ward and Wisniewski both drove in one.

The Cubs’ defense was strong.

Matt Fewel assisted on numerous putouts at first base and caught a

high foul pop-up in the third inning.

Fackler struck out five in two innings while Stone fanned the side

in one inning. DeLaTorre, Joe Hanson and Chris Hernandez each pitched

a strong inning. Grant Spady and Hayden Swift showed great hustle in

the outfield, holding Dodger runners to long singles.

Christian Vazquez limited the Cubs to six hits and two runs

through four innings.

Vazquez came off the mound to bare-hand a ball and threw out the

runner at first.

* Braves 3, Diamondbacks 2:

The Braves relied on the solid pitching of Ryan West and Matt

Thomas to hold off the D-backs.

Cassie Stevenson, who had reached on a double, scored the winning

run on a passed ball in the fifth.

First baseman Colin Moran played strong defense while Brandon

Dieckhoff went 2 for 2, including a home run in the second.

Branden Arceyut walked, stole second, and scored on Stevenson’s

double.

* Braves 19, Dodgers 4:

Charles Nelson homered and doubled and the Braves held the Dodgers

to four hits May 15.

Moran, Dieckhoff, Arceyut, Josh Tierney, Sean Golden, West, Brad

Wilson and Stevenson also contributed to the Braves’ offense.

West and Thomas each had solid pitching performances for the

Braves.

Lisa Hyndman caught a line drive in left field while Stevenson,

Thomas, West, Ruan and Moran each added strong fielding.

Daniel Lee had two hits, including a double, while Nathan Pearson

also doubled and caught a fly ball in right field.

In Farm play:

* Reds 20, Marlins 17:

The Reds won their second straight Farm tournament game May 19.

The Reds were led by Garrett Kahre (two doubles), Nicholas

Halloran (2 doubles, two singles, two RBIs), Adam Ditt (double,

single, three RBIs), Garet Henscheid (double, two singles, two RBIs),

Nicholas Arias (double, single, three

RBIs), Mason Tufuga (double, single, two RBIs), Chad Crivello (two

singles,

RBI), Junior Ozuna (single), Jackson Letterman (two singles),

Wyatt Kanooz

(two singles), Kyle Kutler (single), Marco Perez (two singles,

RBI).

Shortstop Ditt and first baseman Henscheid each made strong

defensive plays.

* Padres 19, Dodgers 4:

The Padres scored seven runs in the first inning on six straight

hits, including

doubles by Dante Capoccia (3 for 4, two RBIs), Kohler Ponsford (4

for 4, four RBIs) and John Santoyo (2-3, 2 RBIs).

Ryan Bonker and Bill Crosson each had singles in the second

inning, but a

fine defensive play by the Dodgers ended the scoring threat.

Garrett Deutsch (3 for 4, three runs), Christian Darrow (3 for 4,

three runs) and Tyler Owens (3 for 4, three runs) started a rally in

three of the seven innings with hits.

Harrison Stern had a key single in the third, knocking in two

runners, and Mitchell Clevidence showed his speed in the sixth with a

run-scoring triple to right field.

The Padres’ defense made several key plays, including right

fielder Ted Zoerner’s throw to second baseman William Reed to catch a

runner off the base.

Clevidence slowed a Dodger rally in the sixth by catching a line

drive, which nearly became a game-ending double play.

* Padres 24, Cubs 5:

Darrow had five hits, four RBIs and scored four runs in the first

round of the Farm tournament May 15.

Santoyo, who had been out ill for a week, had four hits and played

strong at catcher.

Capoccia showed his speed in the second inning, when he circled

the bases for an inside-the-park home run.

Deutsch, Owens and Ponsford each had five hits and combined for 12

runs and 11 RBIs.

Clevidence had four singles while Bonker, Zoerner and Stern

provided additional support.

The Padres infield, consisting of Capoccia, Deutsch, Owens,

Ponsford and Darrow, made several key putouts in each inning.

* Stern had five hits and six RBIs to lead the Padres, who had a

season-high in runs against the Cardinals on May 12.

Ponsford smashed six doubles while Owens had five doubles and Reed

added three.

Leadoff hitter Deutsch scored five times after getting five hits.

Capoccia had four doubles and seven RBIs while Darrow tallied five

singles and scored five times.

Clevidence (four hits), Zoerner (two hits) and Bonker (two hits)

all provided key hits.

* Reds 13, Giants 4:

Kahre, Halloran, Ditt, Henscheid, Arias, Tufuga and Crivello each

scored at least one run for the Reds in their playoff opener.

Ditt, Henscheid and Kahre all played well on defense.

In T-Ball Minor play:

* Zachery Arceyut slid under the tag to score for the Marlins.

Sean McHugh, Spencer Stern, Colin Gardner, Conner Gray, Logan

Twardowski and Riley Lord all contributed for the Marlins.
