House fire a bit hairy but nothing major

A two-story Newport Beach home on 35th Street caught fire early

Sunday but didn’t result in any major injuries or damage.

Jason Lucier woke up at around 5:30 a.m. and saw smoke in his

room, then heard noises coming from roommate Tony Bartel’s room.

Lucier went to investigate and noticed smoke coming from underneath

Bartel’s bed.

Lucier then alerted his roommates, yelling at them to get out of

the house. Bartel was not accounted for after they had made their

escape. Lucier then grabbed a garden hose and went back upstairs to

rescue his roommate and put out the fire. It was reported to the fire

department at 5:42 a.m.

Bartel’s only injury was some singed hair, fire officials said.

The fire could have been much worse, said Jennifer Schulz, public

information officer for Newport Beach Fire Department. She said the

house did not have working smoke detectors. The home had $7,000 in

damages, she said.

Schulz said the fire was likely caused by a halogen shop light

left on in the room. The shop light had some items on top of it,

which probably heated up and caught on fire, Schulz said.
