Newport Harbor High product Misty May teamed with Kerri Walsh to

continue their dominance on the Association of Volleyball

Professionals beach tour Sunday in Huntington Beach.

May and Walsh, who have not lost an AVP tournament since joining

forces, defeated Barbara Fontana and Jennifer Kissey, 21-12, 21-13,

in the title match of the Huntington Beach Open.

May, who was National Player of the Year at Long Beach State, and

Walsh, a former Stanford All-American, have won all four AVP

tournaments this season.

May and Walsh defeated Fontana-Kissey, 21-11, 21-10, in Sunday’s

morning quarterfinals, then topped Angie Akers and former Laguna

Beach High standout Rachel Wacholder, 21-15, 21-16, in the

semifinals.

Huskies sweep UCI

* BASEBALL: The UC Irvine baseball team’s last chance to impress

the NCAA selection committee ended in disaster Sunday as host

Washington rallied for four runs in the ninth to claim an 8-7

nonconference victory to sweep the three-game series in Seattle.

Junior first baseman Kyle Larsen singled in two runs with one out

to cap the comeback off UCI freshman closer Blair Erickson, the NCAA

saves leader with 17 who started the ninth and yielded three hits and

two walks to absorb his third loss.

The first two runs of the ninth-inning rally scored when Greg

Isaacson singled with the bases loaded. He was credited with one RBI

and another runs scored on an errant throw from the outfield.

The loss dropped UCI to 34-21-1 and was another blow to its hopes

of earning an NCAA regional berth. Regional brackets will be

announced today.

Jordan Szabo and Matt Anderson were both 3 for 5 for the

Anteaters. Szabo, who hit his fifth home run of the season, drove in

three runs.

The Anteaters scored a run in the first, then erased a 2-1 deficit

with four runs in the third.

Washington scored in the fifth and seventh, before UCI added to

its lead with one in the ninth.

The No. 13-ranked Huskies, who wound up second in the Pac 10, end

the regular season 37-18-1.

McDonald places fifth

* TRACK AND FIELD: Vanguard University junior Christol McDonald

earned All-American recognition by finishing fifth in the final of

the 800 meters at the NAIA outdoor track and field championships

Saturday at the University of Louisville.

McDonald, who has steadily improved all season, clocked a

personal-best 2 minutes, 12.75 seconds to garner one of six

All-American laurels handed out in the race.

“She had a tremendous season for us,” Lions Coach Bryan Wilkins

said of the transfer from Los Angeles Southwest Community College,

who established a foundation for her track and field success by

competing for the cross country team in the fall.

“She told me she wanted to PR in all three races [qualifying and

finals], but I told her there are not a lot of people who can pull

that off,” Wilkins said. “But, sure enough, she did it.”

McDonald’s PR coming into the season was 2:18.

Vanguard senior Mike Larsson was 11th in the marathon Saturday

with a time of 2 hours, 35 minutes, 22 seconds. He was in fourth

place near the 23-mile mark of the 26.2-mile race, but Wilkins said

he “hit the wall” slowing markedly and falling out of the top 10.

‘Eaters can’t advance

* TRACK AND FIELD: All nine UC Irvine competitors failed to

advance from the NCAA Western regional track and field meet that

concluded Saturday at Cal State Northridge.

Only the top five finishers in each event qualified for the NCAA

championships in June.

Junior Scott Jarvis and freshman Dayne Comrie had times of 52.54

seconds and 53.15, respectively, in the 400-meter hurdles and did not

advance from the preliminaries.

Sophomore Tom Whelan ran 3:49.18 in the prelims of the 1,500 and

did not advance.

Senior Derek Kingrey finished 10th in the men’s discus throw with

a mark of 168-3 and sophomore Mike Beerer finished 20th in the men’s

hammer throw with a mark of 174-7.

Junior Erin Curtis went 12-10 in the women’s pole vault to finish

13th while freshman Kirsten Loftin was 14th at 12-4.

Freshman Orlisha Henlon (women’s) and sophomore John Wratten

(men’s) failed to clear a height in their respective competitions.

Senior Annmarie Turpin, who did not compete in the high jump at

the Western regional due to a hamstring injury sustained at the Big

West Conference championships May 12, has resumed workouts. She hopes

to competing in the heptathlon at the NCAA championships in Austin,

Texas, June 9-10. Turpin’s total of 5,332 points ranks 11th in the

nation.
