Code Red finishes third in tourney

The Mizuno Sluggers, a 14-and-under baseball team composed of local

players, won the Memorial Day Wood Bat Tournament in Placentia.

The tournament was run by the California Competitive Youth

Baseball organization.

The Huntington Beach-based team overcame a first game loss to win

four consecutive games.

In the championship game, the Sluggers scored six runs in the

third inning and went on to defeat the La Mirada Bulls, 10-5.

Code Red third in tournament play

Code Red, a newly formed girls’ Under-13 Division soccer team from

Huntington Beach, captured third-place at the Irvine Memorial Classic

Soccer Tournament.

Following a tough loss in the first round to Riverside United,

Code Red stormed back to post three consecutive victories to earn a

place in the medal round.

In that round, Code Red, coached by Ron Budd and Dale Hensley,

posted a 3-0 victory over Mission Viejo in the third-place game.

Patty Amador scored four of Code Red’s 12 goals in its four

tournament games.

Erika Longoria scored three goals, Kirsten Marony scored twice and

Danica McGuire, Rebecca Cruz and Alison Hensley each added one goal

to complete the scoring.

A tough defensive team consisting of sweeper George Demes, goalie

MaKenna Henry, fullbacks McGuire, Lauren Hanson, McGuire and Erica

Cabibbo came on strong after the tournament-opening loss to allow

just two goals in their next three games.

Alli Budd, Breanne Justice, Rachel Pasternak, Alyssa Strickland

and Jodi Hwang tenaciously controlled the mid-field and created

numerous scoring opportunities.
